Guys,

Need some advice on how to fix plastic threads that have been 'drilled out' by removing & replacing the screws too many times.

Searched and found nothing.

Been stuffing about with my centre console lid, looking to cover it in real leather (long story short, if you want a good job and you're not a pro don't even think about DIY!), and now the four screws which hold the lid to the console are all a bit loose and will not tighten properly.

What can I do to tighten things up so the screws bite & tighten up properly?

Is there anything I can put or pour or poke into the plastic screw holes that will do the job, and still let me remove the screws and replace them so they bite properly?

I've tried various bits of plastic shavings but no use.

Want to avoid glue if possible.

KJ.

Fatter self tapping screws are the first option.

If you can get behind the screw holes, you could glue a patch of really hard plastic like perspex or a small piece of sheet metal behind the hole, then drill a pilot hole and screw into that.

Screw holes into plastic just don't last unfortunately.

Try areldite I guess. I don't like the idea of fatter screws

$45 will get you a new lid inc postage

Might try araldite as a last resort.

Don't need a new lid, nothing wrong with the old one, aborted my attempt at DIY leather well before I broke out the glue.

Sorry Mal, you got enough of my hard-earned last week!

Fixed!

Remembered an old trick from my building trade and handyman days.

Stuck a piece of matchstick in each hole, the same length as the screw thread (around 12mm). All four screws now nice & tight.

Used to work a treat in timber for things like door hinges where the screws were a bit loose, looks like it works just as well for plastic screw threads too.

Simple but effective! lol
