but dont put an led in there unless it is like this...flank led (http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=flank+t10+led&_sacat=See-All-Categories)
the orientation of the rear lights is that a normal led wont shine in the right direction.
you can always do what i did and install a 9 led board (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/9-SMD-5050-T10-Car-interior-Room-Dome-Door-LED-Lights-/150493415369?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item230a1b47c9) ,needs a little bit of trimming ,but is bright as..
Using LED PANELS/BOARDS (http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_kw=5050&_kw=led&_kw=panel&_npmv=3) are a far superior means of getting the best light out of the led.
Normal single globes just dont hack it in the output .
I like detail touches to make my ride stand out from the crowd, even in subtle ways also, but personally I wouldn't bother with LED's for the rear courtesy lights.
I fitted them in my Verada (10 LED T10 style wedge) and they looked like crap ie; a lightish blue colour that lost about 2 thirds of it's ability to illuminate (totally impractical).
The colour itself was pleasant enough for looks but no good if a passenger needs to turn it on for reading or look for something. Even in near pitch black they were barely illuminating the rear.
They lasted all of 10 minutes in my car before removing them and going back to the stock globes.
Oh and don't even bother about those blue tinted incandescent globes either, tried them too & they are even worse!

.and there is your problem ,as you discovered ,led are useless from a side on perspective ,in the map reading lights ,they face forward as such ,when the light needs to be sideways ,hence my above recommendations.
Yes given that the LED's are very directional (moreso than I thought). I also looked at the SMD lights like you suggested @ Autobarn but the ones they had were too big, no wedge adapter & way overpriced (over $ 40 !!) though I will look into buying the ones on the link you provided for fleabay.

well i'm too concerned about illumination of the back seats at all, i only want them for pure asthetics, since the front light is blue when i open my door and dont like the look of the back two as normal light when the doors are open at night, but i will try the LED board
thanks
Cheers for the links maggie3.5.
I ordered 3 sets of the 9 LED boards: 2 for rear map pocket lights & 1 that I will retro fit onto the USDM Diamante Homelink front lighting console & 2 x 6 panel LEDs for the front dome lights (which are a terrible design on the USDM Diamantes).
I'll post again when I get these and fit them.

you will have to completely take apart the rear lights ,as you do ,and with some fine sanding of the led board and surrounds make it fit ,it is a very tight fit.....be warned lol

so how do you pull the rear lights out? do i just use a small screwdriver and try too pop it out?
Yes they just pop out & there is a terminal plug and you just unclip it. You will also need a small #2 Philips screw driver to undo a couple of screws to access the globe.

ok thanks alot guys, i will give it a try.
LED's work fine, I just bought a few pairs of T10 SMD LED's for my Verada, put them in the VR-X when I changed cars and no issues as yet with brightness, they're well above the brightness of the standard globe. It's only the dodgy single LED globes that point forwards that people have issues with.
