Hey Guys n Girls,

Just wondering what is involved with a manual converstion for a TJ Magna.

I am contimplating a converstion to either manual or a tippie out of a VRX...

Also if any1 has an idea on a price, opinions or references to past threads it would be appreciated.

I have abit of time 2 research, next step is lowered the beast 60mm at the front and 40 at the rear.

Once i get my scanner running again i'll post some pics.

I very much think this should be made into a FAQ section.

The general belief is that your better off selling your car and just buying a manual one. Its not a easy task

At a guess, I'd imagine it's way simpler than the manual conversion. It's probably still the same 5 speed transmission but different ECU and gate shifter, that's assuming you're going from a 5 speed auto.

Theres a 5 speed auto??

(Not talking about the tiptronic here)

Well, I'm not 100% sure but someone once told me their 5 speed was an auto and not a tiptronic. It kinda sounded crook as I thought all 5 speeds were tippies or manuals. Me having a manual and never being interested in autos means I never really wanted / needed to know so...

The difference between automatic & tiptronic is just the shifter, and ECU AFAIK.

There is two automatic transmissions, 4sp and 5sp. However all the 5sp are hooked up to tiptronic controllers.

I've looked in to this. Rewiring is easy for a TJ, but ECU firmware doesn't match up, so it's a no go :(

yeah, there are no plain 5 speed autos, they all have the tippy option if they've got 5 gears!

and for the swap idea, it would be cheaper to swap the whole car!!!

the general consensus on manual conversions is not to bother, but then again some of us just love our cars too much,

my understanding is that in the tj, it would be a ***** of a job, by the looks of things the ecu,
wiring harness, (probably the main harness, not entireley sure, perhaps it can be modified easily like the 2nd gen one
flywheel,
clutch,
clutch master
clutch slave
clutch pedal
clutch piping
brake pedal
shifter
linkages
gearbox mount
driveshafts

as you can probably guess for a tj, this stuff would cost a fortune, luckly i reacon the mechanical components from any 3.5l 3rd gen SHOULD fit, but the ecu and loom would probably have to be sourced from a tj :-(

i dont reacon you would have much change out of 4 or 5 grand sadly, but then again, i was quoted 1800 for just parts to convert my 2nd gen and managed to get it all for only 800 :D

Way to much of a hassle, Everyone has wanted to go down this road but its easier to sell and buy another.
