I just purchased a Pioneer AVH-P4150DVD from Onkytonk and before I go mad with amps and stuff I would temporarily like some semi-decent speakers.

The car is a TL Magna ES with the basic speakers fitted it which have a very flat and dead sound. Horrible really. Anyway for now I just want to replace the front 6.5" and rear 6" x 9" speakers without any extra stuff like splits, etc.

The specs on the Pioneer are:

Maximum power output:
- 50 W × 4
- 50 W × 2/4 ohm + 70 W × 1/2ohm (for subwoofer)

Continuous power output:
22 W × 4 (1 kHz, 5% THD, 4 ohm load, both channels driven)

Load impedance:
- 4 ohm to 8 ohm × 4
- 4 ohm to 8 ohm × 2 + 2 ohm × 1

Here's what I would like - a "full" sound with decent highs. I know it's hard given that the speakers are in the doors, but does anyone build a speaker that tries to cater for that?

Happy to install a sub later but for now would like these to put out listenable bass. For the rears I found some PIONEER TS-A6992R 6X9s on eBay but they're rated at 80W and I'm wondering if that means the Pioneer head unit will even drive any decent sound out of them; I've forgotten all the basic stuff on whether the power rating of the speakers should be close to that of the amp. I'm cool with impedance; i.e. don't put 4 ohm speakers on an 8ohm amplifier (that much I remember from my youth).

On phone so will be quick. Without an amp you won't get much. Although it way be 50x4 that is the max rating. The true rms is more like 12rms. So any speakers you add won't do much of their capable power. Look for speakers with high sensitivity for now

I'm assuming you mean like 90+ dB? There's a package deal for sets of Pioneer TS-A6994R and TS-A1684R on eBay for $185 (Australian store) which are 92dB and 91dB respectively. Seems like an OK "just for now" solution. Heck it will probably sound better than the factory "Premium Audio" I have fitted to my 2007 XR6 turbo.

I'm a motorcycle rider most of the time which explains why I'm so far removed from car audio expertise.

Have a play with the EQ and bring up the mids and a little more of the high end.

That'll get it sounding half decent till you decide on speakers/amps.

I've got some cheap JVC Splits I've been wanting to part with for a little while.

I bit the bullet and bought the Pioneers. $185 is cheap for not-too-bad sound.

IF you're keen to swap the front speakers, see if you can get some front 6.5 coaxials with a movable tweeter - e.g. the S series Alpine Coax's, MB Quart Onyx coax's and others. That will enable you to angle the tweeter to improve the imaging. The MBs in particular have a widesphere tweeter design which is optimised for off-axis response. English translation - the highs should sound better even if the tweeter isn't directed at you.

Best speaker I'd recommend is a set of Morel Maximo 6" Coaxials. These retail at around $180 and are seriously good value considering what they are. Morel make some very impressive audio equipment that are used in competitions. I know of one guy who is using the top of line Morel speakers to compete in international sound off's.

Actually that sounds like a really good idea for the next time I do work on it, unless I go with splits. I was wondering if anyone made speakers with movable tweeters!

Well splits obviously have moveable tweeters, if you are taking about coaxils with a tweeter that rotates, I remember, Jaycar, Option Audio and sound stream made some.
