Hey guys im sure this has been a thread 100's of times before but am unable to find one.

sorry for bothering you all with repeat questions,

but im looking at possible doing this.

my question really comes with 2 parts.

1) basically what do i need and what are the costs.

2) are these compatible with my existing sound system consisting of 2x amplifiers 4x speakers and 1 sub, and is this a difficult thing to achieve?

once again i apologise for repeat questions.

Best regards
Tubby

This forum isn't the only place to get info on a car pc. There's literally 10's of 1000's of threads on this stuff on many other forums, blogs, review sites etc - Might be worth hitting up google and doing a search. Check out both Mobile Electronics Australia and mp3car.com

On here, I know that Annese did a Carpc some time ago on his silver TF "back in the day"
With a bit of a search look what I found --> http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67563&highlight=

But as for cost -> how long is a piece of string?

It'll all come down to the setup you choose.

A few years ago, the options for a car-pc were pretty limited. Basically you needed to build a computer that would have an inverter or some sort of power source that would allow it to run with DC current (as computer PSU's recieve AC current), you needed to have a sound card for the different car speakers, potentially a video card for the screen, some form of control with buttons/remote etc, cooling equipment and a software/rom that would run the whole thing. It was quite a involved setup, especially with having to make a custom built case and fit it somewhere in the car. Also if you don't know much about computers then it would get expensive as well.

Nowadays with the advent of tablets and mini-pc's things are different. I've seen and heard of setups with a Lilliput (or similar) screen hooked to a Asus eepc or using tablets instead. The sound output is from a 3.5mm jack so they usually need some sort of audio booster - i.e. a audio processor, to improve the audio. You'd also need some sort of power as well but that wouldn't be that hard to do. Personally i'd rather use a tablet like a Samsung instead an ipad as it'll be easier to get better rom's,software as well as having usb ports!

Here's an iPad setup i've seen in the flesh.

A lot of headunits (like mine) can take a iPod/iPad input and you can just about run a car-pc style system through that.

Otherwise you could just get a typical double din unit like a Pioneer AVIC or something and use that. They're as cheap as $700-800 nowdays and they do pretty much of what 90% of people want from a car pc anyway.

you could get something like this:

saw this system in the flesh at a car show years back, it was running vista and had a Vodafone wireless thingy plugged into the USB port

or you could track down a cheap android system, or parrot does a single din system or so

or if you have the knowledge or guts, jaycar have a 12v power supply so you could wire all of them to a central unit and to a screen in dash/speakers/amp or whatever
