I'm fitting a new set of rear 6x9s to the Magna, and while the bolt holes line up, the speaker framework is a bit larger than the hole, so they don't sit flush.

As a total car audio noob (yet mechanically pretty good), I'm assuming it's fairly common to need to make the speaker hole wider? All I need to do is grind away the flared lip which extends down into the boot. All up it will probably mean widening the hole by about half an inch all the way around.

Also, the speaker grill is probably going to need some Dremel work on the plastic reinforcement so that it doesn't contact the tweeters in the Pioneer 6x9s I bought (TS-A6994R). Let me know if there are any important things to do for the cutting of the metal and trimming of the plastic.

For now I've taken out the OEM speakers and just put the grilles back on. I'm not too fussy about that because even the 4-way Pioneer fronts absolutely smash the stock speakers. It's like someone took the socks off my ears.

Really? So I have to make a spacer to raise the speaker, as well as another spacer so that the grill fits?

I'm going for a stock look.

OK I'll bite. Where do I buy spacers from. Sounds like I'm going to have FULLEE SIK speakers visible in the parcel shelf, which I did *not* want.

Isn't there anyway I'll be able to fit the stock grill back???

You should be able to..

If its only a minor shaving of the parcel shelf.. I dont think it'd be a big issue - Its more so for Roadworthiness.

Any modifications to that parcel shelf NEED to be passed by an engineer, as that point of the vehicle is structural.

How far are they missing by..?

Bugger all - if I raise the speakers by 5mm it will probably fit. However because these speakers have tweeters in the middle I need to remove some of the plastic on the inside of the grill cover.

I picked up some spacers but they're a bit too thick still, so they'll need shaving down.

Alternatively, I could just buy some freaking speakers that fit. Any suggestions? They would need to be almost the same size as factory, and not have tweeters that protrude above the main speaker.

They must be large 6x9s. I've fitted 3 dif brands of 6x9s in the rear of my TL & they've all fit. I'd go with the smaller spacer option. Could you even just space out the screw holes without fitting the whole spacers to save having to trim down the whole spacer (which I can imagine will be tricky).

They are large - I didn't realise they were designed for a Muzza until they arrived. They really look "Fullee Sik" and even the grill that came with them doesn't hide the speaker much. Sigh.

I was considering a screw spacer (like a nut or something) but wouldn't that cause an air gap and crap sound?

Here's a link to the speakers:

Why not get a 6mm Piece of MDF and make your own spacer and then see how it all sits back in? As for a gap causing crap sound you have 6x9 Pioneers, you probably won't notice a difference anyway, otherwise get some closed cell foam and wedge it between the spacer and chassis, or use silicone. As for sounding crap the metal chassis isn't an ideal mount for speakers anyway, every speaker I fit I use an MDF Baffle, and spacing the speaker out on nut wouldn't be a sturdy solution.

To be honest Cutting, shaving or doing anything to the chassis is not worth it purely for speakers especially when they are only for rear fill.

Those are good comments mate. I think as long as I can get the stock grill back on I'll be a happy boy.

If you do, do it let us know how it goes.

Willdo! I hate people who start threads and never finish them! I'll even endeavour to post some pics.

OK I got the speakers fitted. No cutting required, no spacers required. It did require a little coaxing with a ball-peen hammer though.

So yeah, I did alter the shelf a bit, but only the flared lip that extends into the boot. I basically tapped it outwards about 5mm all the way around. After that I was able to mount the speakers normally and the only other work required was to remove some of the plastic reinforcement from the underside of the grills.

Factory look but definitely not factory sound. Sure it's still a cheap-ass job but it's better than what was there before.

Hey it's worth pointing out that the boot springs are touching the speakers. Is this a big problem, or a minor annoyance?

If it rattles put some foam between them.

If it rattles put some foam between them.

I'll take that as meaning "minor annoyance". :-)
