I think I have run out of brake pads in my wife's TF Sedan. It has done 245000 km (original pads), so I guess it is about time. The thing I query is the noise... I expected a high pitched squeal from the wear shims, but the noise has a mid frequency - probably somewhere around middle C on a piano. It is certainly wheel speed related. It only started today, so I guess that I have a bit of time up my sleeve to organise replacement pads. They will be done as soon as possible, although I am not calling it urgent at this stage. I will check tomorrow to see which pads are making the noise.

Anyone here have any comments or experience on this? I cannot think of anything else which will make such a noise.

If its mid-pitched and perhaps even rumbly, its possible it may be wheel bearings.

Well today I got out and checked the brake pads, The front have an average 5 mm pad friction material thinkness left and the rears have an average 3.4 mm remaining. This is well above the MMA recommendations of 1 mm, so I guess that the noise must have come from the parking brake. I didn't think that the pads would be worn yet - I got 335000 from our TM front pads, although the rears used to wear out fairly quickly (about 80000 km). I readjusted the brake shoes and we'll see if the noise is still there or is worse. It was the freuqency (pitch) o fthe nosie which got me puzzled - I have heard the squeal shims go on other cars and they make a very different noise to this one.
