OK folks so I dropped the hammer on some King Springs (LOW all round). $250 delivered from Archm in Bayswater - not bad.

Anyway, with regards to spring removal and strut disassembly do I need to crack the strut lock nut before it's removed from the car (at the front anyway). The service manual talks about special tools, but I say bollocks to that.

This thread seems to suggest I do not need anything funky:

We did some weekend just gone..

Strut Out
Spring Compressors On
Strut Top Off
Remove Springs
Remove Spring Compressors
Place Spring in Seat
Spring Compressors on New Springs
Strut Top on
Slowly remove spring compressors, make sure they're seated correctly.
Refit

So that tells me you didn't use any special tools to hold the strut while you cracked the strut top bolt, right?

The only tool you need outside of a basic socket set is spring compressors.

Just brute strength from this 169cm 70kg that stares at me in the mirror every day.

I always crack the top nut on the shock first with a couple of turns, then I go about jacking the car, and strut out. Makes it easier to undo the nut once the strut is out.
When putting the strut together, I do up the nut till it's finger tight, put the strut back in, then once the car is on the ground, the top nut is then done up. So it's the first and last thing you do.

Thanks fellas, I'm really looking forward to doing this. I just fitted a factory towbar to her and it will be nice to do a job which doesn't require removal of a zillion scrivets.

Anyone recommend a strut brace as well? I mean, while I'm at it...

RPW seems to suggest that all Magnas benefit from the strut brace as it helps stop the car wandering when on a cambered road. Bollocks, or truth?

PM megatron.. He was doing a group buy on Whiteline gear and may be able to get you a good price on a strut brace.

TL/TW had strengthened firewall as I understand it and the improvement is less noticeable than with the earlier models, but still there with an advanced suspension setup.

Sounds like it may not be worth it unless I'm also upgrading my shocks then (which I'm not right now).

OK folks I fitted the front springs last night. Now onto the rear springs, but judging by the service manual this looks harder than the front!

I'll take any guidance you've got. :-)
