Hello Gentlemen. This might look like spam but it isn't. I'm just sharing my recent positive experience (so far) using an Auto Transmission treatment called Rislone.
Some background. I have a 99 TF wagon with about 320,000 ks on the clock. I usually do all the work on it myself. I've replaced the timing belt, CV joints, brake discs, and those 3 damn spark plugs at the back, and generally it still runs as well as any car on the road as far as I'm concerned. However, I know nuthin' about auto tranny's and the clunk as it changed up through the gears was starting to get very uncomfortable. And worse than that, it started to feel like those sudden clunky changes were going to cause something to break.
I had the transmission serviced at the local auto tranny specialist at Belair in S.A. hoping that would provide an improvement. It was pricey because he refilled it with super duper genuine Mitsubishi approved tranny oil. I have no complaints about that but ultimately he said he couldn't do anything about the clunk. The 'discs' were worn and there was nothing that could be done except a total tranny rebuild for around $3000!! That was out of the question of course because the whole car is probably not worth a whole lot more than than. So my decision then was to just keep driving the car until the tranny blew up then scrap it. That could have been in 50 ks or 50,000 ks.... no way to tell.
But the clunking got so ugly I really couldn't stand it any more so I decided to try some transmission additives. I figured I didn't have a real lot to lose. I tried a cheaper one, (Wynn's or Nulon I think) with no perceptible change, so then I went for this heavy duty '2 part' stuff called Rislone from Supercheap. At nearly $30 a bottle it aint 'supercheap' at all but it was a last resort. I'm pleased to say that so far (2 weeks later) the results have been surprisingly good. The changes are so much smoother that I don't even notice them now. And thats really all I had hoped for.
In the long run I don't know what effect this stuff will have on the transmission. I googled for comments about tranny treatments and read a few scary stores about how they will screw up the transmission. That could be BS but even if its true it was headed that way anyway, so at least I'll have smooth shifts 'til it really craps itself.
I don't know whats in this additive. The red stuff is very thick, so it probably isnt doing doing much more than thickening up the oil thats already in the tranny. So maybe pouring a bit of 90 weight gear oil or a bit of 'stop smoke' honey into the tranny might have done the same job for a whole lot less money. (Maybe I'll try that next!). My googling did turn up some comments about really thick 'Lucas' red stuff that someone used to use so maybe that was very similar stuff).
Anyway, thats the story so far. I joined this forum about a month ago looking for a simple cheap solution to my clunking tranny problem. Not surprisingly I didn't find one then, so I thought I might return to share my solution with you guys. I know these clunking trannys are a common problem in high milage Magna's and theres not much that can be done about them.
Cheers
