Hi guys I was thinking of installing a new stereo, something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/7-Double-Din-Car-Audio-Stereo-DVD-Player-TV-Free-CAMERA-/160640920234?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2566f1eaaa#ht_9148wt_992 would something like this fit in nicely? I'm just concerned about the depth.

Wow, thats cheap, its got a few features for the price, but it might actually sound worse than the stock stereo...

Be very careful, a while ago I got one of the XTrons from Shopping Secure, in the pics looked like a great unit, got the unit and looked average, this one was supposed to be a GPS set up, took months to get the SD card. Once installed kept having issues with the screen not closing properly, gps not working etc etc, in the end it went under the happer as in I smashed it and tossed it in the bin
There are many many units with these sorts of features to be had at places like JB for not that much more and the best thing is if something goes wrong they are just down the road

Just to clarify, The major brands give you stuff that you normally take for granted...
Like CD antiskip protection, Good AM/FM tuner.. Good quality Digital to Audio conversion. ( less distortion @ volume - Cleaner - Truer sound )
An LCD with a decent responce time. *
Theres a lot of things that you might miss out on, if you go down that track, The only reason I'd put a unit like that in a car, and that would be when I move the car to new owner....
But, it will fit, the depth is OK.. And if you a ES (or single disc player in the 380) nothing to alert you of the comm error, if you dont have the sexy Multifunction display....
If you hunt down a decent unit, with remote in, you can even get the steering wheel controls to work...
*EDIT - as Madmagna just added - if you get a cheap unit, the software will be cheaply written too...

I've not bought a cheap LCD before. But as usual, cheap LCD's off center and from above look terrible , constrast will be poor, motion will be shocking, light will be woeful and colour range will be horrible....
Load times will suck, Menu will be clunky, the unit might be noisy, the mechanism sticky, the remote will be worse quality than a Macca's toy in a happy meal....And australian speaking help will be non existant, Help from a local store will be embarrassing...
Other than all of that, whats stopping you?

cheap yeah... quality = very bad i purchased one a few years ago with a detachable face, it played the dvd,s ok sounded ok after a week of use the screen started to become loose and drop off whist driving . so i would crack the shits and ram it back on then volume would go up when turning down it would also change mode when you turned it up... so in the end i ended up that frustrated i started to punch the unit every time it would play up... now it doesnt work at all :woot: long story short dont be a tight ass

You guys are full of shit. Did you acrually read the item description?

There, see? It will perfectly solve the issue of bad car rear view effect. Show me a single brand name, quality unit which lists that it can solve the issue of bad car rear view effect. NONE.
Ignore these haters and buy this top notch product, mate! It last you long time!
EDIT: Also, it works great on that BMW 6 Series so it will be super high luxury quality great success for your 380!

Its weird, the one I had worked decently - GPS worked well (positioning was near instant) all other functions, though spartan, worked well. The only issue I had was with the clock which kept resetting to what it thought was the correct time - though eventually it would work. I'd probably still be using it now if the USB connector hadn't broken, and if the missus could actually work the touchscreen. (was very laggy)
The sound quality was pretty average, and there was only one rca out for the sub. Next time, money permitting, I'll get a JVC one.

I recently put a double DIN headunit in my 380. I bought a black fascia from ebay, but mits fix (here on the forums) have some of the stock double DIN fascia that come with the ES models of the 380. Try them out, otherwise check ebay. It's easy to install, just pop off the one you have now and stick the other on. I'll attach some pics for you to see. (These are 2 different headunits. I replaced the no name brand one with a Pioneer headunit because the Pioneer was a lot better). If you need any more pics or info let me know :)

Just curious as to what happens to the top LCD display with the double DIN LCD stereo upgrade? Does it just do nothing? Will it still display aircon information and time?

I recently got a really good pioneer doubledin from autobarn for $500, they ordered the fascia from a company called Stinger. Went right in no worries. My top display still shows all the info you need (AC, time, temp, blah blah) and also says 'comm error' because the head unit and it dont 'talk' to eachother. I was given the option to have the working steering wheel controls and (apparently) whats needed for the communication between the two.. I just wasnt keen on spending another $200 for something so small.

$500 dollars for the install of the system and the double din facia? $500 for the double din facia itself?

Bit off topic. But I'm upgrading my full audio system into stock head unit over the next few weeks. Wondering if there are any issues i may encounter with the headunit in terms of outputs and inputs that it has. How easy is it to hook up multiple amps and speakers?

as you can see from my pics, everything remains the same with the top screen, but it displays a 'comm error' message where the audio info would normally be.

I've just done that same Pioneer system :) Here's what it looks like with the factory stereo fascia from the base model 380. I paid $50 for the fascia from a local wrecker and the Pioneer 2450BT was $488 from JB Hifi. Great deck, plenty of features including the Parrot bluetooth which works flawlessly.

I've done the deck, 2 amps and rear speakers. Very easy job - hardest part was running the power wire through the firewall. Everything else just unclips and you run your cables. There is enough space on the passenger side for the thickest power wire, 2 speakers and 3 sets of RCA leads. The front factory splits in the SX, LS/LX, VRX and GT are very capable of running off an amp either in highpass or full.
I found the wiring diagram for the factory deck on this forum which helped me to wire up my pioneer deck.

Just curious, how did this install turn out with the steering wheel controls? Just left them not working or does this unit have remote in?
