Just wondering if it were possible to assess the condition of an alternator when it is out of the car?

My current alt has a screwed bearing or something as it is quite noisy, now ive been looking to replace it for a while now but just haven't got around to it. I bought a second hand alt off these forums quite a few months ago and the alt has just sat around gathering dust....and white powdery stuff on the metal bits!

I really don't want to pay for a dodgy alternator to be put in, but at the same time i'm not wanting to buy a new alt or get one re-conned as my car has done quite a few K's now (230+), so its just not worth it.

The alt makes a squeeky whooshy noise when the pulley is turned, not sure if they are supposed to do this, but it has been sitting around for a while so I wouldnt be surprised if its that whitish stuff is inside and caused rubbing somewhere.... If it is, the noise will probably go after a few minutes of use in the car...
I've also blown it out with an alt compressor to make sure they was nothing inside....

Thanks!

Not possible to determine the electrical condition of an alternator without a test bench or putting it in a car to try it out.
White stuff is aluminium oxide, normal and is only on the outside.
Pull the regulator out and look at the length of the brushes, condition of the armature.
Turn it my hand and if it still squeaks it needs new bearings.
Pulling an alternator apart and putting in new bearings isn't hard, but then again if you need to get someone else to put it in . . . .

A sparkey can fit a recon alternator with a warranty. I know your car is old and you don't want to spend money on it, but it won't drive very far without a working alternator.

Just chuck the fecker in yourself and give it a whirl. Can't be more than a couple of hours work. You have a multimeter right?
