just out of intrest whats the widest tyre people have put on gen 1's, i had a tyre guy saying mine were 2 small and should be putting 235's on and atm 215 is just in the gard and hitting the gard at full lock, then he tried telling me it was wheel offset?

Shaun, you have aftermarket rims, biggest determinant of width of tyre is width of rim. let us know how wide your rims are then we'll be in a better position to help. :D

offset is correct he told you the correct thing however there is nothing wrong with 215 where you should be using 235

There is a legal aspec of tyres on rims. You might want to look into that too. if he says 215 is too small maybe they are. Id say the wheels arent ment for the car in the way of offset..?

From the workshop manual:
Executive,GLX and SE models P175/75 R14
Elite and Elante P195/60 R15

On my TP wagon i have had 175,185 and 195 on the standard rims.

Just got to remember the wider the rims you go the more drag induced and also greater propensity for aquaplaning in the wet!!
The legal aspect should be checked as well. Something about rim tyre combo cannot project outside of the guards. Alot of 4wd have flares to get around it.

yer the aquaplaning makes it a bit more intrestering to drive and there just inside the wheel arch
