Yesterday, I ran my car to completely empty. It was on the bottom of the empty line. I went to fill up, and could only fit 60 litres in. I thought it was just foam built up so I waited a minute or so, then tried again. It was chockers. is this my fuel sender playing up, or did I misread my fuel capacity? when I usually fill up from 'reasonably' empty, the car takes about 55 litres.

My TJ owners manual says the sedans fuel tank capacity is 72L, the wagon is 71L

I've filled 69.5L before. Just because its on E doesn't mean its empty.. wait until the car starves while turning and you'll be getting close.

Yeah but 10 litres? That's a fair bit of fuel for it to be sitting on the empty line.

Mine sits just below 'E' and the fuel warning light on intermittently when I fill and it normally takes about 63-64 litres, and that has a new sender unit in it

Just be lucky the sender unit is working at all. It can give you a little shock when you don't realize it isn't working and you don't notice the needle is on empty just when your late for work.

You shouldn't use at least the last say, 5 litres anyway, as over time crap builds up in the bottom of the tank and you start to use that instead.

LOL!

I've filled with around 68/69L once or twice..

Not the smartest thing to do.. But hey.. Such is life!

Put 68 litres into my old car (TE) one day. Had fuel starvation on every corner on the way to the servo.

As a rule of thumb you have a driving distance of around 100km until empty when your fuel light comes on, this ends up being around 10L of fuel for average suburban driving. So a 60L fill when the gauge sits at empty is completely normal.

Life's right. 60L is normal from the empty line.

If your guage is otherwise working, I doubt that you have a sender issue. When my sender died in the vrx it would go to full when I filled the tank, but drop down to bellow empty after a few mins of driving.

You do realise that the fuel lubricates the pump, I have seen pumps catch fire when the fuel is so far gone that it is running dry....something to think seriously about

Yesterday, I ran my car to completely empty. It was on the bottom of the empty line. I went to fill up, and could only fit 60 litres in.

Guys... the op still had 10 litres in his car, stop giving him a hard time maybe? He was just wondering why he couldn't fit another 10 litres in even when his fuel gauge was on empty.

So it regards to the issue the op had, yes the magnas have a large reserve! More so on the later models I believe. I've driven my TJ for 100 highway kilometers on empty (and yes I knew I had some more left) and according to my calculations when I filled up I still had 5 litres left in it.
