Hi Guys,

I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a 2001 Verada and when I started it this morning the auto gear change was irregular and then after about 1 kilometre all drive stopped. The car will not move in 'Drive', 'Reverse', or 'Tiptronic' modes. The engine revs as if in neutral. I checked the auto oil level and it is fine, in fact it was serviced earlier this week. There were no warning lights or messages.

Does anyone have a clue as to what could be causing this and is it a major problem, costwise? Thank you.

Hi,

Firstly a 2001 is a 3rd gen.

It could be the transmission computer has carked it. Also, The auto transmissions suffer from what is called a wave spring failure. It breaks apart and gets clogged in the mechanicals. Its a rebuild time if this is what it is.

if its just been serviced
tcu not in fail safe mode
has to be a pressure thing

so think faulty torque converter

Are you getting any effort at all from the transmission to move the car? Any strange noises?

Is common, not TCU or Torque Converter

Is the oil pump or planetary gear set, either way is a trans rebuild or you will need a used trans replacement.

Who serviced it? There was another thread about a 380 auto last week that acted up not long after servicing it. Did they use the right fluid?

if i buy a used secondhand box do i have to change the torque converter?

I would say planetary gears as a pressure loss will cause a trip code in the ECU.

I assume the box would come with it.

Completely different symptoms... the 380 wouldn't change beyond second gear, not a complete loss of drive. Also, it was the result of a servicing error immediately after the box was fiddled with, not a problem which just "happened" one morning.

Just be careful that the service was done properly. If the filter was changed and it was a cheap eqivalent some of the pick up holes could be blocked.

Also, someone else spoke about fluid. I had a Toyota that was supposed to use Dextron 2 and Dextron 3 was put into it. Valvoline technical said it could give harsh changes, which it did. The car then stopped with no drive. I opened the gearbox sump and noted the filter was fully clogged with fibres hence no fluid pick up and no drive. The Dex 3 was stripping the friction material off the clutch packs. I changed the filter and flushed with about 8 litres of Dex 2 and everything went OK.
