Hey lads,

Just wanted to see what knowledge (mainly in quality of subs) the people here can provide!

I currently have the Pioneer 12" Champion series and it just doesn't give me the right type of bass!

I find it hard to explain but it doesn't give enough of a kick. It rattles the whole car but doesnt have that lovely quick burst that I want.

Is this a problem with the way I have set it up or is it just a cheapish sub and what is expected?

Thanks in advance

if you want clean crisp sound with punch that keeps up with say dubstep or drum and bass (just using as an example) try downsizing to 10 inch subs they are more responsive and after some time swapping and changing i have now opted to get rid of my 5 12'' subs and go for 4 10'' that are sounding better keeping up with my type of music and sound 40-50 cleaner hope this gives you an insight

Sounds good man! Any advice helps! I just want to plan it well so I can get a good system going!

You might not need a new sub at all...
What kind of box is your pioneer in. Sounds like a ported box....
Moving to a sealed box (even placement) might help with accuracy and Punch.... But some sub just do well in a sealed box, or the other way around sometimes..
Whats the model of the sub, and the Amp for interests sake?

This is my sub: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/Subwoofers/Champion+Series/TS-W308D4

And my Amp: http://www.ryda.com.au/Kicker-08ZX200-2-ZX-2-Channel-Amplifier-p/zx2002.htm

Yes I have a ported box too! I never knew the difference until now haha :)

Bugger, I hope the models your linked to are incorrect...... But they are not very compatible...
I ran across this the other day, and its not your fault, if you didnt know, that sub is a Dual Four ohm, that means it can can easily be wired for a 2 Ohm Load, to get the most of a single Channel Mono Block....

See
http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/ca/learningcenter/car/subwoofer_wiring/1DVC_4-ohm_mono.jpg

But the amp you have is a 2 Channel - and at its most powerful its a Four Ohm output...( its combines together both of the channels @ 2 Ohms to make one 4 Ohm Channel...
Note the Picture below is for a Dual 4 Woofer, but it load the amp @ 8 Ohm, very much halving its power in Bridged mode...
http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/ca/learningcenter/car/subwoofer_wiring/1DVC_4-ohm_2ch.jpg

The sub itself is OK, But the amp its connected to is lucky to push 100 watts cleanly to the woofer, which is 400 Watt Nomimal..... The Amp should have beem a Mono Block
Like This
http://www.ryda.com.au/Pioneer-GM-D7500M-Mono-Car-Amplifier-p/gmd7500m.htm
Or This
http://www.ryda.com.au/Kicker-08ZX400-1-ZX-Mono-Block-Amplifier-p/zx4001.htm

Then it should Wired as per the first link..

But the recommended sealed Box for the sub is 1.25 cubic feet, as per the manual.. There are Minimum and Maximum's but the recommended is usually best....
Its hard to describe a sealed box, but its cleaner, tighter, has more accuracy (generally) is less windy (huffy) and Boomy, but does lose a little volume when moving from a ported box...

Marty

Alternatively - Instead of changing Amps, you could look at a 4 Ohm woofer Like This
http://www.performancecaraudio.com.au/products/hertz-es-200-subwoofer.html
Note the 200W RMS @ 4 Ohm - perfect for the amp you have.. (single voice coil)

I hope you have a single voice coil pioneer - not the dual. Then this post will be useless, except for the Box size Info ;)...

Haha they are correct and I had no idea! This is what the guy at Jb Hi Fi told me to do! I blame him!

So what you are telling me is my amp is crap for my sub. Would it be a good idea to buy one of your recommended amps and use it on my old sub? And is it a good idea to use my old amp on my 6x9's to give them a little more?

Firstly Yes

Yes the Amp will power 6x9's- But I'd rather see it run a set of component speakers up the front, like the premium Magna/Rada's do....Or run a 4 ohm woofer if you have a set of splits already..

If its not that old, I'd be marching back into JB and tearing them a new Ahole.....

You are probably within your rights, if you still have the receipt, to have JB amend their mistake.. But it will take a lot point making, (note - not arguing)

It has been burdening my ears for around a year and a half now! I'm not good at yelling at people sadly. I'm a gentle giant!

Well if you say front speakers are a good choice than that is what I will plan! Depending on what a good friend of mine has on hand I will plan to purchase a new amp for the sub. I may be able to source something cheap and amazing from his as his competitive gear is currently sitting in his garage!

The only problem I have (which I have not had a chance to look into yet) is that I have a limited edition VRX which apparently has some crazy speaker setup so that may or may not complicate the situation when i start installing the new sound system. I have to email Mitsu to get the code for my radio as the guy I purchased it off had no idea!

Thanks heaps for your continuing advice. I definitely owe you one. I will purchase you a single light beer of your choice and have it mailed to you! (drink responsibly) :P

No problems, BTW too much beer and the stamp wont stick, but they are more fun to lick...
Yell out if want more help. PM's are welcome, then we'll take back to this thread...

Have you seen the verada door tweeter Pods, there are a little triangle that sits in front of the door mirror...
I'd be looking for tweeter that sits in there. Get a set, and make sure the new Splits fit in there. Thats half the problem solved.

Then search for MDF Speaker Baffles on AMC, theres a heap....

Yes I do have little tweeters and a stacking head deck! And so my excitement rises!

The code for the radio is on the way and when that arrives I will see how well it all works stock!

I'm not sure if you will get a notification of this thread SH00T but it is now time to purchase/install the new audio. I have a wiring kit ready to go into the car and should be fine with all the wiring stuff.

My problem is making sure all the pieces fit together and not derping like last time with all my herp derps.

I think I will just buy the amp you linked me (kicker) and then use the old amp to power my new 6.5" at the front :).

So I still need to pick out some 6.5" for the front that will work well with my old amp + find some 6x9 to chuck in the back. Some recommendations on stuff that is pretty good but not crazy pricy would be amazing!

I'm gonna PM you with a bump bump bump cause I have little to no patience

Also in one of your previous posts you said something about dual/single coil Subs. Mine is a dual!

I'm not sure how much more complicated power wise it is to run two amps.

Would I possibly be better to get a 5 channel Amp (below) and run it all off that?
