Hey everyone
I have a 98 TH magna v6 3ltr
Just a few quick questions
1. Will 66.3mm speakers with in my door ? (Got some bargain kenwoods from ryda )
2. What wiring harness would I need ? 1 plug or 2 plug (can't seem to find an answer)
3. Talking about illumination if I don't connect any wires the display will stay on correct ? (not like it won't light up at all ? )
Please reply
I've been asking everywhere, only place I find any help is custom forums (talk about MDF cut outs. Which I'd like to avoid)
Thankyou you kindly
Brian

Hi Brian,
Welcome to the forums. Nice ride you got there in your DP. I see its got ralliart from lip and a VRX back & side skirt. Looking good! Is that a custom paintjob or just the camera taking a wierdly purple shot?
Anyway to answer your questions:
1) The stock magna/verada front speakers are 6.5inches and are held up with a plastic baffle. 66.3mm is around 2.5 inches so it definitely will not fit. However I am confused as to which full range or split speakers would be 2.5 inches? The only type of speakers I can think of that would be anywhere near as small as 2.5" would either be a large tweeter in a 2 way setup or a midbass driver in a 3 way speaker setup. What kind of speakers did you buy? Do you have a link?
2) I'm not sure what you mean by your wiring harness question. Are you talking about the harness to the speaker or to the headunit. If its about the speaker then the stock magna/verada units are connected by a 2 wire harness (postive + negative). Aftermarket speakers generally do not come with harnesses instead they have terminals that you can either solder too or fit some sort of plug/harness/spade connector on the wiring. Either way you will probably need to cut your stock harness off and wire in the speakers. Like I said - you can solder the wire to the speakers or use some spade and/or audio crimp connectors instead.
3) Again you're not being specific and I'm not certain what that question is regarding. Are we talking about the headunit and the illumination for the little display? Or are we talking about the centre console illumination? If it's about a headunit then do you have a stock magna headunit or an aftermarket one? If you only have a stock TH basic one then you will need to upgrade this if you want to have any hope of running aftermarket speakers.
In most cases - the best thing you can do any aftermarket speakers is to create a custom MDF baffle. However if you don't want too then get a set of 6.5" speakers and they should fit straight up into the stock magna plastic baffles.

As per Q.2.
If you're looking to add a an aftermarket harness, the aerpro app0111 ($15 supercheap) is the one you're after, you can either chop the the dual plugs off and solder them onto your headunit plug.
Or buy the harness that matches your headunit and mate the two dual plug units together, I'd go for the first option as the app0111 doesnt cover every wire and some modification is required anyway...
Q.3 If you dont connect the illumition wire the headunit brightness will remain Bright ( or to what you set the brightness to) as soon as you turn your lights on. Some Headunits have an auto mode for this, but mine is connected and working fine, on this pioneer, and the last JVC I ran, I have TW tho, but I dont think it makes a difference..
Many aftermarket speakers run well off Headunits, but need to chosen carefully....especially off the premium units which offer a better amp built in ( not much better compared to Amps ) but better....

4.3 cm depth is tiny...
But go MDF speaker Baffles ( saw your reluctance to them) but this a very big bang for buck mod to improve the sound of any speaker, making the speaker mor dynamic, and help reducing the sound waves coming off the rear of the speaker, (backwaves) interfering with whats coming out the front, improving clarity, tone and accuracy...
Take off the plastic speaker mount, and fabricate one out of MDF, this will give you a bit more clearance and improve the sound as well, just make sure its not too high, so the speaker wont interfere with the door card.
Be sure to cut the hole in the MDF right behind the door cards speaker hole, so the sound comes right out, the closer to the door card the better.
But a 4.3cm mounting depth should not give any trouble, IIRC, you can go up to about a 7.5 cm mount depth using MDF Speaker Baffles pretty easily....
But theres heaps on installing speakers on AMC...
