John what gives you the impression that's what the OP wants?
Anyway lol wtf that's completely impossible! You cannot make a headunit run a usb drive if it never had one to begin with. It needs to have a function that can sort through the folders and play songs.
The only thing they could potentially do is wire in a AUX input to a radio station and use an mp3 player/iPoo'd, or use a FM modulator with a usb. The modulator would connect to a FM frequency and send the audio through to that station. In effect, the modulator would control the play of music. It's most likely going to sound pretty crap thought - esp cheapies.
If they want to play music through their usb and don't want to sacrifice audio quality then they're going to need to get an aftermarket headunit that has a usb mode. That's the best option. You can get PAC controllers that allow the OP to retain steering wheel controls as well.

Ahh I see - no problems - I was just wondering if you're making assumptions.
He will not able to modify the CJ lancer headunit to take a USB input. Completely and physically impossible as the original H/U was never programmed to do so. You can't just wire in or plug in some usb thing - how will the headunit know how to deal with the usb?!
Like I said - his options are either:
- Use an FM modulator that has a USB mode.
- Fit an aftermarket headunit. All cars can be modified to fit an aftermarket unit - some are just harder than others and need serious modification. With the CJ Lancers - you need to get a new facia & pocket to accommodate an aftermarket head unit. They're about $70 from overseas and around $150 locally. When buying from overseas make sure its for a RHD version. If they want to retain their factory steering wheel controls then they need to buy a PAC (or similar) control unit and also a headunit that has support for steering wheel controls (90% of them do anyway). Obviously then they'll need to either wire the headunit iin or use those Aeropro ISO adaptors. (around $30 for the pair). You can non-generic USB headunits for as cheap as $120 (they are very cheap quality though) - around $200-250 will give access to better headunits.

No these are charge only....
If you dont have usb, out probably wont do what you want.
You will probably need a 3.5mm to two rca cable, connected to a fm modulator, the wire type are best, loops directly to your antenna cable...
The usb I posted would be handy for charging, which is what I thought you meant.....

now i think we should find ya a harness that also retains the steering wheel controls

bro if you change the stereo im not sure if you can retain the steering wheel controls
the harness just plugs into the stereo pin and provides wires to wire up to the new stereo
shoot can shed some light on this if possible!
looking at the mits website says you have a usb connection already, but that could be just for the 2012 model idk
if you bring it to school on thurs, could probably nut out the location for ya

USB input is probably only on the upper spec models, ES is the bottom of the range. But why ask us about the Lancer? You have one, if there is nowhere to plug in a USB connection, you are out of luck short of replacing the radio with something more capable.

John and OP - Read through my posts again. This is the third time I'm posting this in a 15 post thread...and it'll be my last. I'm usually very patient with new people who don't know stuff, but it gets very frustrating being ignored and having to write the same thing multiple times. I'm not dealing with 8 year olds. One of you, at least, is 17.
I have said MANY TIMES that even with an aftermarket headunit there is a way you can retain the factory steering wheel controls. It's not some ISO connector. You can get adaptors/interace units that work with aftermarket headunits and you program in what each steering wheel button is supposed to do. PAC and Axxess are the most common brands. Do some research. The CJ lancer has plenty of information about it on the internet.

I get that and all. We were all new once and there's still some things that everyone on this forum doesn't know. It just gets very frustrating when people ignore multiple posts about the same thing.
Needless to say I would advise you to speak to the dealer. Are you buying brand new or a 2011 demo model or something? If it's a brand new 2012 model and it's listed for the ES model then it should be in your car. If not then ask for answers. I do however strongly suspect its for the higher models or is a optional extra. Otherwise the new 2012/2013 models could've got an upgrade or something.

Year old thread . . . mmm
If anyone is still interested, the mid year 2011 and on Lancers with the stock radio have a USB connector in the roof of the glovebox. Weird place I know. But it lets you connect up your expensive phone/mp3 player or cheap USB stick via a USB extension cable and keep it out of sight and out of the Sun.
Bought a base ES 09/2011 Lancer, as far as I know they all have them from mid year 2011 onwards, don't know about the up market model with the huge screen in the dash though. Anyway, 16Gb USB stick on our Lancer now and it works fine. No need for the CD player. lol
