Hey guys,
So as many of you probably know from my ride thread, in my possession I have TW VR-X side skirts and KW Xi chrome door trims. The time has come for me to get these painted up pretty soon, but obviously I'll have to remove the old stuff so I'm just after some general advice/tips regarding doing that from anyone who has done it before I miss something and make a mess of it.
So any tips for removing the old adhesive effectively for the door trims and mouldings (If the mouldings have them. I've read the KJ ones are clipped in.) This is what I'm most concerned about as I want to remove them as cleanly as possible so I can do a good job of adhering the new ones.
And any tips for removing the side skirts? Looks from the back of the TW VR-X ones like they'll just clip/bolt in.

Sideskirts and Door Trims - Unbolt - They're quite straight forward.

Good. I'll give that a go Saturday morning then. Actually that's really good as there's not any point test fitting the door strips themselves. So I can get the stuff painted early and then figure out how to get the trim adhesive off cleanly while that's happening hehe!
I'm mainly just concerned about not scratching the paint around where the trims are and getting a nice even surface for the new adhesive to go onto.

If you're really pedantic..
You could take the door cards off and have a look on the door skin and see how they attach.
I've never really looked TBH

On My TJ The small strips were just double sided-taped in. I used an eraser wheel, also known as a caramel wheel, to remove the old adhesive, basically its a wheel that goes on to a drill, doesn't harm the paint but removes the adhesive.
The lower door ones have two plastic bolt like things, one at each end of the door. Just open the door and look on the door itself and you should see them.
EDIT: The caramel wheel is used in this video:

If your painting them yourself why not leave the strips on the car and mask around them. the skirts are just held on with screws and clips.

The chrome strips are held on with a LOT of 3M double sided tape. You will see its location on the back of your existing ones. The OEM KJ ones just peel off. Get a flat tip screwdriver, cover it in cloth, and wedge it in at the end of each strip and lever it off. Once you can get a hand grip, then just pull them off. Easy. I didn't damage mine when I did this, and they were successfully given to another member with the same paint code.

I'm not painting them myself, and they're not on the car. I have TW VR-X and KW Xi strips to go on my KJ. I need to remove the old stuff safely to fit the new stuff.

Okay. That was gonna be my initial plan but I was concerned that would leave too much adhesive behind as tends to happen with badges and the chrome ones for instance. It sounds like this should all be pretty simple then really.

Adhesive will be left behind.
Nothing can be done. Just have to remove it :) Polish works. Every method of removing these strips will leave adhesive behind due to the shape of the panels. Hope you are patient.

I know it's not all gonna come with the strip but done right a lot of it will. Better than all of it certainly!

How much is it to get the side skirts painted if you don't mind saying? (or PM me if you do)

$200 a side, but that includes the door mouldings and chrome trims. These are all pieces with existing paint, just the wrong colour.

Might sound crazy, but why dont ya just give the car to the sprayer and get them to fit them seeing as its what they do? Also thats alot to pay just for that to be painted, maybe you could do a deal on fitting...

I'd disagree that's a lot. With all the small parts involved (Six door trim pieces, four mouldings, two bracket/end piece thingies and two big ass skirts) plus the skirts themselves that is a decent quote, plus the guy had good reviews and when I spoke to him, by far was the most honest and helpful, really checked everything out including inspecting the paint on the doors, and looked at how it all fits versus the other few places around which just went "Oh yeah. Side skirts? $150-200 each." - without actually looking at the trims and mouldings. I had planned to ask them about fitting cost when I go, but I'm preparing for doing it myself anyway as it's not that hard so if the price is much more I will do it myself. Plus this way I don't have to be without my car for long.
