Hey all,

I have a 2001 TJ magna I've just changed the head gaskets on, got it all back together now i have to set the timing. I vaguily remember on some (very) old cars I've had I needed to remove the drive belts and vacuum advance from the carby prior to adjusting timing. Is there anything like that for this car? Or am I right to just hook up the timing light and adjust it with everything on there?

Thanks!!

Ignition timing is set by the ECU taking inputs from the crank angle sensor (under the cam belt cover) and the cam angle sensor (inside the distributor). No manual adjustment needed or possible.

So put that timing light away, ok?

Got the workshop manual? Time to do some reading and update your knowledge on how these motors do things.

Using evoscan and the cable you can set the ECU to run at base timing of 5 deg, then you check it with a timing light. I found without setting base timing it runs about 10 deg at hot idle.

Sweet! That makes it easy then. I don't really know much about cars really, I just kinda figure it out as i go. But it's all running fine. So the elongated hole on the distributor which allows you to rotate it doesn't allow you to adjust timing?? When i seen that i just figured that's what it was for, and the manual just says take it to a dealer for timing. Either way, it's all together and runs like a dream! Thanks for the heads up!
