View Full Version : Intermittent grinding noise coming from front right wheel area.

Have just bought an old TS 95 V6 auto Station Wagon for peanuts and have been slowly fixing up the expected and unexpected issues that came with it.

The

Have been addressing each annoying noise as it comes up and all the while there's been a reall irritating grinding noise from the front right wheel area of the beast.

Have dealt with the following possible issues that were making noise of their own and which I thought could be related to the grinding sound"

+ Ticking noise - Both CV shafts were cactus so replaced them with new ones from Repco around 3 months ago; and
+ Scraping noise - Pads were worn thin so replaced them with new ones all round and replaced all
the rotors while I was at it (1 month ago).

Now I'm currently running BA XR 6 17 inch rims on it, and the fella I bought it off had it lowered at Pedders, 30mm at the front and 45mm at the rear. Am wondering if this is likely to be putting stress on the splines at one of both ends of the cv shaft due to the angle of interaction being a little off-tap.

That said, the grinding noise is only coming from the front right. When jacked up, there's a bit of play in the wheel so I'm gonna replace the bearing, plus the ball joint boot is leaking, although there's no squeaky noise coming from it so far so probably need to replace that while I'm doing it. I've youtubed some different shot bearings noises tho, and it doesnt sound like that, so am not sure

I guess the question I'm asking is, has anyone had a similar problem? As I'm seriously getting the heeby-jeebies from this noise and at this rate I'll have replaced half the car trying to fix it.

Would bet its a bearing, even if its not, do your bearings.

I like to replace all the bearings in something when I get it so I know their all good :P

Had the same on my front left when I got it, best to get a new one in ASAP if thats the case, mine had pretty well dissolved into a mushy, greasy metal paste, not the best for anything lol

Wheel bearings?
Brake splash guard rubbing on rotor?
Bits of gravel stuck in strange places?

Your probably right. I went out to Repco and picked up a set for $81, plus a new ball joint for $40. Will do the other three come pay day. Cheers mate.

@MadMax,

I took the rotor off and took a look at the spash guard (is that the same as the dust cover?) and it was rubbing a bit, could see the scratches on it. Bent it back from the rotor a bit and seems to have fixed it. Thats one more irritating sound fixed, but its still hasnt solved the grinding/rumbling sound. Could be some gravel somewhere, but there's just too many damn 'strange places' on a Magna to look. ;-)

Do the bearings and them give us an update.

Hey guys,

So I replaced the right bearings with a set from Repco, ended up having some serious trouble getting the bearings out, were jammed in pretty good (which is a good thing I guess) between the hub assembly and the knuckle. Managed to knock half of them out before taking the part to the local mechanic to rip out the remains and stick in the new bearings.

Now, the grinding sound is still there, and at times so is the ticking noise.

The grinding vibration noise seems to be at its worst when heading down hill, so am wondering now if its suspension? The guy I bought it off did dump the suspension a bit. But yeah, still no idea as to whats causing it.

The ticking is even more intermittent than the grinding and its odd, as the cv shafts are both less than four months old and it has new pads and rotors all round.

And now for the rub. Having replaced the bearings, there appears to be a new noise. There's an audible squeaking coming from the front right wheel when I turn it (when I turn the wheel as its jacked up, not as I turn the steering) and a cyclicle groaning noise coming through the car floor in that area when I drive.

Is this just a case of a new bearing being worn in or something more severe?

Appreciate any help guys.

The grinding noise couldn't be misconstrued as road noise of shitty tyres could it? (depending on the condition of your tyres obviously) I have shocking tyres for road noise and it could quite easily be mistaken as a grinding/gravelly noise?

That could be the cause for the original grinding noise I guess.

Still a bit confused about the new bearing sound tho. There's a squeaking when I rotate the wheel, llike there's a mouse trapped inside the assembly, and a repeating droning noise coming through the floor when I drive.

Maybe dud bearings?

Hmm, one thing that should've been an obvious question is, what wheel + tyre combo are you running?

I'm only running 215/60-16's and they still rub on full lock or if i'm pushing hard into corners or downhill, sounds exactly like what your describing, but eh lol

Wheel bearings?

My guess it it related to the brakes, good splash og brake clean may help

Remove the pads and put the wheel back on. See if it makes a difference...

This may be a longshot but try checking engine mounts. Had a tf once upon a time and broken engine mount made weird noises particularly on the downhill coasting and worse downhill with engine braking gearbox in 3rd. Thought it was the cv's but no. Engine mounts. Good luck

The new pads you put in don't have wear indicators on them that have somehow got bent on installation and are touching the rotor maybe??
They tend to make a sqeaking noise like a mouse.
Also the driveshaft is not touching an undercover somewhere when on its wheels that might not show up when you have it jacked up??
Tail from a CV joint boot clip not secured and projecting a bit and scraping as it turns........Seen that a few times or the clip is too big for application!! Vee
