Hi all,

Just a quick question to see what I would have to change on a 3.5 TH motor if I was to put it in a TL.

I have a mate that has a blowen motor in his TL & I have a good low KM's TH motor & was going to put it in for him over the weekend. So I thought I would ask the question here before I run into any problems. I thought I would have to change the inlet manifold but not sure about anything else. By the way both cars are auto.

He is out of work at the moment & i'm trying to help him out.

Cheers & thankyou. Brett.

As far as i know ,every thing should be a simple straight swap over ,though ,you may loose a few kw due to the differences in cams between the motors.

Thanks for that. I never thought about the cams. How many kw would be lost?

TH magna 147KW and from TJ series II onward is 155KW so about 8KW.

Thanks for that. 8kw's isn't much, I can pump up the tyres an extra 10 psi & he won't know. lol

Can you recover the cams from the blown motor? Might not be worth the effort though, even if they are salvageable... the actual gain from the #4 to the #6 cams was less than 8kW - more like 3kW, as the early TJ 3.5s were listed at 150kW. I don't know what the increase to 155kW was due to (it isn't ECU related) but it seems to have come in with the TJ2.

I'm not sure about other states, but in VIC, you are not supposed to fit an engine out of an older car into a newer car (example, you can't fit an engine from TH to TL but you can go TL to TH), the car wont be roadworthy. Has something to do with the pollution stuff or something.

Even if the engines are exactly the same, it's still not allowed and they can tell by the engine numbers.

I went through all of it when I done an engine conversion on my VS Commodore, ended up fitting a supercharged V6 out of a VY Commodore.

The main concern is that you can show that the 2 cars had he same emmission controls, in this case will not be an issue as the 2 cars did have the same emmission controls, same purge system, EGR etc etc. Have never had any comment or issue with VicRoads ever in relation to fitting motors etc etc

Oh ok, now that you mention it, they could be the exact same with the Magna's (i'm still new to them). When I had the Commodore, the VS model had the ecotec V6 without an EGR, whereas the VT-VY models had the same ecotec engine with an EGR, so that's probably why you couldn't fit an engine out of a VS into a newer car, but you could the other way around.

Thanks for all the replys.

I did the job on Saturday & the car is going like a dream. As for the emmission controls they looked to be the same on both cars but I did put the plenum, wiring & throtle body off the TL on the TH motor when I change the plugs.

Cheers. Brett.
