Hi Folks,

When the TS 1st starts it sits on 2000rpm.

Sometimes it comes back down to 1000 after a few minutes.
Sometimes it doesn't.
Sometimes it only comes back down to 1500

From everyting I've searched it looks like the Carby uses a Wax Thermo Pellet to open & close the choke.

I have a few questions.

1. Can you replace this yourself?
2. If not would the car still start when cold if I disabled the choke altogether?
3. Anyone ever priced an exchange rebuilt carb?

Thanks
Rob

Check the small water hoses that feed it to make sure they are not clogged and thats not affecting its operation. There is an adjustment procedure for choke in the workshop manual.
Unserviceable pellet as far as i can remember as not looked at a carby for ages not had any problems in the past and had a few carby models with 200k on the clock etc.
They are pretty reliable.
I have adjusted them so they idle a bit slower at start up instead of revving their heads off which they don't really need to do.
They can be hard to start without an operating choke and run badly until warmed up.
Carbies are hard to come by at the wreckers as they get used for other things i have heard. Same motor is used in the triton as well. Keep a look out on ebay for another carb if thats what you want. A service/gasket kit for the carby is around $40 or so but nothing in them for the choke. Vee

May be possible to convert it to a manual choke as some carbies you can but not looked into it for a Magna as never come across one with problems. Vee

You can download the manual here copy and paste into your internet explorer and the choke adjustment starts on page 122 onwards diagrams there as well. Vee

Choke adjustment as outlined in the manual doesn't work well with an old carb.

Find the autochoke adjustment screw, undo the lock nut, and wind the screw in. Adjust until you get a good cold idle, which comes down quick enough as the wax pellet heats up. If the car stalls when cold, it's wound back too far.

(PS Have you checked coolant is actually flowing through the wax chamber - 2 hoses connect to it. Also, a permanently open thermostat will stop the choke from opening rapidly.)

Yeah I was lucky enough to get one with low K's and logbook serving, still hasn't stopped the usual Magna quality issues :(
