I was just on the phone with RACV to ask a few questions about making some changes on my TJ Magna exec.
So here they are:

Extractors/Headers = If the part does not improve performance by a lot then it should be fine to install. They did say that there could be some issues if I had a commodore but this modification is fine on a magna. I asked if the modification increased engine power by 10kw would it be an issue and I was told that it was well within limits.

Exhaust System = As long as it meets EPA noise pollution restrictions it is ok to install

Alloy Wheels = Height of the rim can be anything and is not an issue the only thing they care about is width. 7" is the max width that I can use on my TJ magna.

Tyres = Profile is not an issue but the wheels will need to be 7" wide max.

Springs = I will only be allowed to lower my car 30mm. However they will account for wear and tear so if I could get a 40mm drop and on the invoice say 30mm then I will be ok.

All modifications have to be installed by a licensed mechanic and the above modifications should apply to a driver of any age or rating but to insure the car I must tell RAVC everything that I change on the car and have it on my policy.

So there you go straight from the horse’s mouth. Im a little happy with the answers I got but I will need to find a shop that will do me the favor in the springs department.
I was thinking about getting 17” but I might get 18” now but road worthy could be an issue as I thought you could only go up 2” from stock rim height which is 15”?
Hope this will help someone make a decision on modifying their car but do make sure to use this as advice and to make a call to your insurance company before modifying your vehicle.

The major problem you will have is to find nice 18" rims with 7" width. as most of the nice looking 18" rims are either 7.5" or 8" wide.

As for the size upgrade you can get a dorr side playcard for your car to may be sports/vrx play card and it will get you throug the RWC.

how much is the 40 mm drop any way ???? lows or super lows (Kings)

Did you get the name of the sales person you spoke to? That would be a very important thing as the answers him gave you where very dodgy. If you can get insurance on his quote then go ahead and do it, just make sure all the mods you talked about with him/her are listed on the policy. Extractors/headers are a performance modification, it does not matter weither it is on a commodore, falcon or magna, its all the same thing. And thats whats hinging the insurance for you. RACV allows three performance modifcations, so you have

* Larger wheels
* Exhaust
* Headers/Extractors
* Lowering

Now this guy has said Headers and Extractors are not a performace modification which is rubbish, they are 100% a performance mod, if they were'nt you would not do it, its not as if they are pretty to look at.

Just for everyones information, you will find most major insurance companies such as RACV (NRMA), AAMI, GIO ect will allow 3 performance mods. Performance mods are things such as:

*Larger Wheels
*Exhaust
*Headers/Extractors
*Lowering
*Chips
*After Market Engine Managment
*After Market Turbo
*After Market Intercooler
*After Market Air Filter (POD - not pannels that fit into factory airboxs)

Most major insurance companys will allow 5 non performance modifications. Non performance mods include:

*Spolier (if non factory)
*Tinted windows
*Body Kit (if non factory)
*After Market Stereo (Some companys put a $ limit on this)
*Interia Changes (ie seats, leather if non factory)
*Sunroof (if non factory)

Hope this info helps, if you have any insurance questions, just give me a hoy, I've worked as customer service and a claims officer at AAMI, so I'm a little knowledgeable :)

But that's illegal.

I'm with RACV too :D

Hmmm...I got a slightly different story....

Extractors/Headers
Same. Fine to install. I just told them that I wanted to increase the bottom-end torque in-case I do some towing, and they were fine with it.

Alloy Wheels
They told me that the height can ONLY be 2" greater than height of the original rims fitted to the car.

Tyres
Same. The profile doesn't matter, but the wheels/tyres cannot be wider than 7".

Springs
Same. It can only be allowed by not more than 30mm, the suspension travel cannot be reduced by more than a 1/3 (from the original), and the lowest part of the car needs have at least 100mm ground clearance.

I had a few hassles trying to get my insurance sorted out, so I ended up seeing one of their assessors to make sure it was all done properly.

there's a big difference between width of a rim and the width of the tyre going on it, i would say they mean your rim can be no wider than 7". same as my policy with NRMA................. how f*ckin hard is it to find nice 18" wheels!!!

im insured with racv and ive had a lot to do with mods with the over hte past few weeks

LOWERING
30mm is the limit

EXTRACTORS
so long as it not on a turbo its fine

EXHAUST
so long as it meets the legal epa its fine

WHEELS
rubber can be anysize, although you cannot breach the 7" RIM width

all in all i recon racv are extremely fair, would have to be one of the better places for modding and for a decent price to insure.

IMHO the 7" limit isn't very smart as many cars have 8" wide wheels as standard. Then you have higher end Mercs etc that have >9" wide wheels for example. I am insured with RACV and couldn't buy my wheels in 8" wide for the exact reason.

teK, they actually ask you what type of car is it and then they tell you what are the factory specification you your specific model.

e.g. for my Solara : they knew that it comes with 15 x 6

and for my sports : they knew its 16 x7

and offcourse if you tell them you are driving a monaro with 18 x 8 they cant tell you to go below factory specs and get 18 x7. Its more from car to car.

But yes i was also this close to get very nice 18 x 8 but held back because of 1".
