I have to get my 90,000k service done now and the place is quoting me $117 just for the brake pads. I was under the impression you can get really good pads cheaper. Any info would be awesome. Thanks.

depending on the pad it seems about right, 380 front brakes aren't as cheap as magna brakes.

General view is that QFM HPX pads are the best 'street' pads for the 380.
They cost around the same as you've been quoted.
You can get them from Mal (Madmagna) for that price or maybe less.

QFM HPX are around the same price as yo have been quoted, are a good pad, low dust, low noise BUT will not generally last as long as some of the more generic pads. I use them because of the fact they are clean and quiet, they work well both cold as well as hot

I have QFM HPX pads on my 380 brakes. Very happy with them. They're dusty, but nowhere near as bad as most performance pads. They have good feel and perform very well. I would definitely buy them again.

Maybe fooz could chime in here but the ceramic pads he got made are bloody good. I wonder how much they cost and if we could get sets done again. The only downside to them is they seem to hold alot of heat so after a hard drive abs doesn't seem to work when u mash the pedal. But they never really fade.

But i think the reason was the brake fluid boiling from the excessive heat. Need some better fluid.

Those pads you are running are Hawk ceramic pads. Because they didn't have anything to fit the 380 they were cut down out of a bigger pad. From memory it was the cost of the pad plus $60 a set to cut them.
Try some Brembo LCF600 fluid, thats what I'm running & was when I had those brakes on my car.

I have Bendix Ultimates for my 380 which were the same price again as you're being asked for. When a fellow 380 owner drove my car he nearly threw me through the windscreen at the first red light.
Try QFM HPX its what I use...has anybody mentioned them yet? lol

Lol bill, yes
Ultimates are ultimately noisy, dusty and bad on rotors

I have had Ultimates on my car for about 3000 k's and I agree they are dusty but with the DA Slotted rotors they work incredibly well. They were recommended by Pedders who did my suspension What is the 'bad' they do to rotors?

They chew through rotors like no tomorrow
If you can find Ferodo DS2500 pads to fit the 380 caliper, then you will have optimum stopping power with stock calipers

Thanks Dave. I think I'll try the Ferodo's or the HFX. It seems either would work well. Having paid so much to have the brakes done up I'm disappointed the Ultimates aren't what they were made out to be . I tried to get upgraded calipers as well but Pedders were unable to source these.

They eat Rotors, they are dusty as hell and give it a few more k's they will sound like finder nails being scratched down a blackboard. They make my Brembo set up sound quiet
If you want brake upgrades, the evo X brembo package is a good choice, will need to change wheels BUT will be cheaper than a lot of these "overseas" brands being offered out there at the moment plus are a quality product. I have evo X rear rotors and rear callipers here that are not being used, the fronts are best sought from ebay in the US.
Interesting you paid a lot to change a set of pads, then again Pedders, what more would you expect....no bull :)
kevinm
15-01-2013, 06:02 AM
Thanks. I already have 18 X 8 wheels so I won't need to change those. I'll see about the Brembo's. I assume the package includes rotors, calipers and braided lines, so I am expecting to pay a bit for the package.

Sorry just because you have those wheels does not mean they will fit. Brembos do require wheels
kevinm

That sounds like too much as I have only just had the new wheels fitted. I think I'll get the HPX pads to repalce the Ultimates. Everything else works really well.
Does anyone know if pads for 3rd gen twin piston calipers are inter-changable with 380 calipers?
Madmagna
15-01-2013, 07:35 AM
No they are not, totally different pad and calliper
Thanks mal.
My DS2500 suggestion is no good, i highly doubt Ferodo will make the pad for the 380 caliper
Just to bump, went to look at the brakes while the car was getting a service last weekend. Don't seem to have the tool to get the brakes off. Anything in particular I need? Last time I changed brakes I still had my TS. It looks like theres some kind of locking nut on there as well where the bolt through is

I'm going to put QFM A1RM in next i think, the ceramics don't grip the rotor at low speed, high intensity braking.

Just had my 120,000 service done and Elizabeth Mitsubishi quoted me $475 to supply and fit genuine brake pads. I'm currently at 80% wear front and rear.

Sound like a rip off price to me.
Replacing brake pads is one of the easier DIY jobs, and you can get front pads much better than OEM for $50 - $120 a set. Last I knew the QFM HPX were around $120 a set from Mal (that's both sides).
Do yourself and your hip pocket a big favour and DIY!
Also strange that your fronts & rears are both at 80%, I've always found the fronts wear four or five times faster than the rears (the fronts do 90% of the braking). Unless you are already on your second of third set of fronts and still on the original rears?
I still have my original rears and at 138,xxx k they are only half worn.
Edit - I thought you were talking about the front pads only, on re-reading it's obvious you are talking fronts & rears.
Rear pads are cheaper than fronts coz they're smaller, I think the rear HPX QFMs go for about $80 a pop from Mal.
At around $230 all up including postage still a helluva lot cheaper to DIY.
If the dealer quote includes brake fluid replacement, again an easy enough DIY job (although it helps to have a second pair of hands), and a new bottle of quality Dot 4 brake fluid is usually less than $20.
So you can still DIY the whole job, with quality pads, for around half the price you were quoted by the dealer.

If it includes machining the rotors, then that's a fair price. But if it's just supplying and fitting new pads, shop around!

Not sure how many pad sets the car has gone through - I haven't had them changed since I got the car at about 90,000km.
Never done DIY on brakes before, even on my old Magna, might need to enlist some help if I decide to do it myself.
Will also call around to some other places to get prices too.

I'm starting to get a bit of a grinding noise now, so will need to do my brakes pretty soon.
Got some prices today for Bendix GCT pads - seems to be the most common one that everyone has in stock, or can get on short notice.
Best price I found was at Sprint Auto - $82.95 per axle plus another 5% discount since I'm a VIP member :) - they also do the Bendix Heavy Duty for $87.95/axle.
The concern I have is whether my rotors need machining or not, especially since I am getting a bit of a grind now.
Profix quoted $305 to supply and fit GCT's as well as machining my rotors.

Is this price for all four or just per axle ?
If it is for all four ,yeah ,not too bad,if for only two ....run....lol
Figure it out ....its about forty-fifty bucks to machine a pair of discs....say ninety for your pads, that $130 per axle...see where this is going...
Minotaur
26-03-2013, 04:31 PM
The $305 is for all 4 wheels.
I'm leaning towards getting them to do it, at least if something isn't right I can take it back to them, much as I wouldn't mind learning how to DIY them, there's not enough of a price difference to justify it, especially since I can just drive the car there and drive away with it all done. Seems pointless do just get the discs machined there and do the pads myself afterwards.
Might see how much they can do the heavy duty ones for, not much of a difference in price for the pads themselves.
Red Valdez
26-03-2013, 05:18 PM
Don't just look at the price - heavy duty pads will squeal more and give off more dust. Some of them (like the Bendix Ultimates) tend to wear out rotors quicker too.
If you're not into driving spiritedly I'd stick with the GCTs.
Doesn't take a whole lot to get the GCTs to fade though, so if you enjoy a mountain run or two, I'd definitely get something else.

Check pad thickness for yourself. The fronts may need doing, but it's far too tempting for any workshop to tell you the rears need doing too when they don't and tell you the rotors need machining when they don't. Often profit goes before rational thought, I know that from personal experience at that dealer. They try to upsize your bill every chance they get.
If you don't feel confident judging for yourself, get someone to have a look or perhaps take one of the front wheels off and take a photo of the disc surface, and the caliper from above, so we can see the pads?
I did my third gen brakes, all 4 corners, for $70. Big price difference.
(PS. If you do get them done, be very careful to bed them in. Don't rely on them working 100% when you drive off, a really heavy push on the brake pedal may be needed to slow down normally. )

Grrr so I just called Profix to book the car in and the now say $305 is for the fronts only, even though I was very clear yesterday I wanted them all done.
Looks like I am back to DIY'ing it.

If you just want your pads changed,i will be at TreeAddyMan (in Mawson lakes) on Saturday morning ,im sure we can whip them in and out in no time flat.
and if you really want the discs machined ,ring around the area and see who will do it on Saturday morning.

Sounds like a plan :)
I don't know if the discs need machining at all to be honest. The braking isn't uneven at all, so I am probably just being over-cautious.
Please PM me with details re Saturday Morning - time etc.
Thanks :)
