Hi Guys,
I'm plodding along with rattly chains and I've managed to shut it up a bit with some Penrite 25W-70. Is this going to do any harm other than maybe blow out seals etc? I've ordered a kit on ebay (chains + gears) and also a gasket set.
Cheers

i only ever use 20w 40 or 20w 50 whichever one is standard for the tr. Iv never heard of using 25w 70. Time will tell if it is ok to use.
you are using the wrong oil. thats if you have a 1992, 2.6lt, 4cyl TR.
If the cam chain is loose, the last thing you want is for it to jump gears. That could do some very serious shit to your engine
Magnas are very tough, though and they survive shit that no other car will. I got my car airbourne and landed on very solid ground. The engine immediately shut off. But then i turned the key and the car was still alive. Just a big dent in the sump and also the radiator was bent. No big deal.
They can also survive thermostats not opening, and even run like that for a few days. When that happened, i thought it was just a broken temp. guage, seeing it jumping up and down like a tachometer in reverse. That happened to me and all i had to do was replace the head gasket. It took a lot of work to do it, though.

Read this, you'd be far far far better off with a 5w-50 mobile 1 oil. Before you go 'that's too thin' read the link. All you're doing is vastly increasing your oil pressure, with no gain in lubrication, more than likely it'll do more damage than good to your engine. Not to mention killing anything remotely like fuel economy, think about it, a 70 grade oil @ operating temperature isn't far off limited slip differential gear oil.... that stuff is pretty viscous, not designed for an engine. You MIGHT want 25w-70, for a big old 6L straight 6 petrol in a truck or something that's under very heavy loads. Not in a 4g54. I highly highly encourage you to go for something like 5w-50 or 10w-50, whether mineral or synthetic. Will do your old girl far more good than penrite 25-70
