Does the engine still rev ok in neutral, does it sound ok?
If so, could be your clutch on its way out?

Yeah sounds like a worn clutch.

Second gen clutch has rivets holding the friction face to the metal disc. Normally they are well below the surface, but when the friction face wears, the rivets start to run on the flywheel or clutch plate on one side, and she slips. Happens very suddenly. (Been there, done that.)
Will need a new clutch and flywheel refacing if it is scored. Some tricks to replacing it yourself. Do a search, or get an experienced mechanic to do it - just replacing bits doesn't work.
To test clutch: Handbrake on, try to take off in second. If the clutch pedal is all the way up, but the engine doesn't stall or the car doesn't move forward, clutch is slipping.
