Hello,
The power steering pump in my TH is starting to make horrible death throw noises, especially at the start of the drive. A new pump will cost $500. so I was wondering if you can get a reco kit for these.
I have not seen any, are they available and if so, is this something I can do without any highly specialised tools? Or should I just cough up the $500.00?

Have you called Bursons/Repco/Autobarn? They tend to have aftermarket parts for most cars.
Otherwise, you may need to go down the second hand path. Head to a local wrecker and inspect the car the part gets removed from. Most wreckers also offer some form of warranty. I know Jolly's offer a 'return' option where you pay a bit extra and if the part you pick off is faulty then you can exchange for credit or pick off anouther part.

Most of the time this is caused by air in the system, letting the level get too low will do it. Change the fluid, bleed it properly, and try again. Bleeding involves disabling the ignition (disconnect CAS) and crank engine until the fluid level stays the same. Just starting the engine aerates the oil, takes weeks to get the bubbles out and quieten the pump.

So far no one has said anything about doing a reco, so I'm guessing it can't be done by the back-yarder (me)
I will most likely go for for a second hand pump from the wrecker.
But the idea of air in the system is worth a try first.
I had a look a the resevior last night and it was sitting on very low - just on the end of the dip stick. Shame on me!
Thankyou for your posts, much appreciated, if you have heard of someone doing a reco on the pump, please let me know.
Cheers

lol Not much to recondition in one of those, it is a very simple design. Metal body with vanes rotating in a housing. Pull it apart, if it is scored or vanes are broken, buy another from a wreckers.

Replace a bearing, oil seals?
And it looks like you need a hydraulic press to get to the bearing.

Had mine apart but didn't look at seals or if bearings were replaceable. Honestly, if it is that far gone another from the wreckers would be a better idea. Plenty about, they usually don't give any trouble. If you replace it though, you need to bleed it anyway, so why not try that with your current pump? (Unless you are convinced it is wrecked, like the pulley flops about or something. lol)

I guess my last post was a bit "what if..."
But I'm taking you up on your suggestion and doing a bleed before I think of anything else.

If the body is scored then you may as well buy another pump. Your basically going to buy an entire pump in parts then put it together anyway. Unless it has a liner.

(* Takes a bow *)
I only know because I've been through the whole process of noisy pump, pulling it apart, etc.
(*Takes another bow and gets boooo-ed off stage. lol *)
