View Full Version : TE 2.4L No Spark

Hi there, I have a 2.4L TE magna with no spark. What is the usual culprit for this issue? Are there any test preceedures for the dissy its self? The cables running into the dissy all have voltages, however a few of the terminals on the dissy don't have resistances. Is this normal?
Any help or opinions on this would very much appreciated. I thank you in advance.

So as it turns out the camshaft isn't turning. The other belts are turning just not the timing belt, although the timing belt is tight. I guess I'll have to pull the motor to repair and retime it. I hope the crankshaft hasn't snapped or the crankshaft key hasn't broken off.

I take it its winding over but won't start, could be you imobiliser stoping from firing . the imobilisers can be a culprit. they cut spark and injector pulse..

If the cam isn't turning either broken timing belt or broken camshaft. belt would be more likely tho.

If it's a belt mate, then I wouldn't bother trying to repair it. Seriously better off buying a reco engine. Maybe time for a upgrade to a V6?

It's not the timing belt, the timing belt is tight but it won't turn and it looks to be in good condition. But... Both of the fan belts are turning. Anyone else think that's Weird?

Perhaps the timing belt teeth have been chewed out by the crankshaft sproket.

Is the 2.4l an interference engine?

Timing belt skipped a few teeth?

Well crankshaft is turning so thats how the other belts are moving thus the camshaft may have seized and the belt is just spinning at the bottom and chewed itself on the cog and all the ribs are gone.
Or bottom toothed cam belt drive cog has a broken keyway on the crankshaft and just spinning. Vee

I'm pulling the motor out now to see what "carnage" I have to deal with. This motor is quite easy to pull I should have it out and on a stand in a couple of hours. Hopefully it is an inexpensive fix.

I got the motor half way out. It keeps getting stuck at the back where the centre of the flex plate hits the top of the transmission. There's no room in the front to push the motor forwards any more, the pullies are against the side of the engine bay, dammit. It looks as though I'm going to have to keep prying and lifting. I can also see a hole in the side of the engine block with a conrod or something poking through. It looks like I need a new engine.

How Bad?

Very bad! Something went inside the engine and jammed the balance shaft then the crankshaft chewed off the timing belt teeth. Now there is a hole in the engine block just above the balance shaft with something poking out that I cant identify. I'll post some pics of the carnage, then I'll strip down the engine and find out what jammed the balance shaft and punched a hole in the block.

1 up 3 down. Yep, that's a Con Rod poking out of that hole.

Musta made a nice sound when it did that!!
What mileage has it done and was it making any strange noises prior to going bang......... like big end knocking??Vee

Engine's absolutely shagged. Good excuse to upgrade to a v6!

Did that sort of damage to a 2.0L Sigma motor once. Big end bolt broke, rod out the side, half a piston sitting outside the engine on one of the engine mounts. Not much to salvage when a motor does that.
I hope the current Mitsu 2.4 engines are better, because the third gen 2.4 sure is a . . . . . (expletive deleted)

It happened in a car park and then they tried to start it. I'm not sure of the mileage as that was a replacement motor. I got another engine today for $100 it was so cheap because I had to pull it and it has a couple of dogey valves. I'm in the process of changing the valves now with good ones from the junked engine.

What engine did you get? Another 4 banger?
Sedition

Yep, I got another 4 banger. I got it all in and wired up now it won't start. I got good compression, strong spark, ignition timing is spot on and fuel in the rail but still no start. The whole motor has good earth continuity. Every plug and hose accounted for, still no start.
How do I know if the immobiliser is not letting it start?
