View Full Version : X-PACK HiGloss paint protection - BS?

One for all you detailing experts out there! (Dave?).

My GF bought a brand new car last night, a 2012 model Hyundai I30 hatch.
Just waiting on dealer delivery, picking it up next week.

The sales rep tried to sell her a bunch X-PACK "vehicle protection" treatments - paint, vinyl, leather, carpet & fabric.

I told her not to bother.

But she's interested in the paint protection, coz she does lots of gravel road driving.

Just looking at the blurb in the pamphlet it smells a bit suss to me.

It claims to have 'self cleaning' properties because "titanium dioxide TiO2 is present in nano particles suspended in a cured, inorganic clear coating." And "when struck by light photons, it reacts with air and water to oxidise organic compounds, turning them into carbon dioxide, hydrogen and other bi-products that escape into the air".

I only did chemistry to year 12 level (many moons ago), but this sounds like a load of hogwash to me.

The GF is worried about stone chips, and even if this stuff does what it claims to do (make the car easier to clean), I can't see it preventing stone chips.

My advice to her so far is "it's a load of BS, run a mile".

But she's under presure to sign up for it as part of pre-delivery, so she (and I) need advice pronto.

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who knows about this stuff.

KJ.

If they are giving her pressure, maybe suggest that she walks away and finds a dealer who won't try and sell b/S stuff, think of the damm mark up on stuff like that. Bet if you were signing on the dotted line, they wouldn't hassle you.

Oh ok then :)

****ing LOL. What a load of swibble. How much are they charging? $500 - $750? Other than being a known carcinogen, titanium dioxide particles aren't going to do shit other than blow a hole in your wallet. Waste of money. If the particles were as effective as they say they are, they would eat the coating in which they are contained
:bash:

Tell them to stick it as its pointless. Take it to a proper detailer who will apply a good sealant over the top of the new paint. Should be good for 6-12 months protection if using good quality products.

Out of curiosity KJ, were you and your girlfriend approached by a ming mole? See here for definition - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ming%20Mole

lol and so many guys fall for it! does it not cross their mind that the only reason the hot girl is flirting with them is to gain access to their wallet?

Dave,

Yep, another variety of Ming Mole. The main salesman, once he had clinched the deal, called over another salesperson who was a middle aged woman, who then gave my GF the spiel. So not your normal 'cleavage showing pretty young thing' used on blokes, which would not have worked on my GF but possibly might work on another 'older' woman.

And they're asking $867 for the paint treatment. Highway robbery I reckon.

Thanks guys, I'll be telling the GF the same as my original advice - run away, don't look back.

KJ.

They're known as 'Aftermarket Sales'

They specialise in selling the add-ons.

She's just doing her job, so dont bag her out, she just needs to figure out a better spiel.

Funny thing was, the GF commented that she was happy with the salesman because he didn't patronise her and didn't ignore her and try to sell the car to me instead. I stayed in the background and just chucked in the occasional comment, mainly during the test drive.

Not bagging out the 'aftermarket sales' assistant, as you say she was just doing her job. Just not impressed with the products she was trying to sell, the cost of them, and the rubbish in the brochure.

Hahaha dealer gave me the xpack for free lol. When I bought swift for my wife 4 years ago, its still in original packaging.

Beauty about these products is how can you prove they don't work? So good luck claiming so called lifetime warranty.

I just bought brand new asx, they wanted 2k for paint protection hahaha, I was polite though and said that as much as I want it I can't afford it

Standard dealership procedure, I'm afraid.
They don't sell enough cars in the month to make a reasonable profit, so they try to upsell any new car, this includes paint and upholstery protection, insurance for electronics, etc.
If you wander through a dealership, look out for the pretty young thing behind the desk. Her job and how well she does it is important in the scheme of things, at least to dealer profitability. If she pays you attention - unlikely unless a salesman gives her the nod - treat her with sympathy, for she is just a highly paid (?) piece of window dressing and sucker bait. Bit sexist and undignified really. I mean, using sex to sell something? Where will it all end? lol

Highly paid.. On avg $32000p/a - Some higher/Some lower, but all in all - Not the best pay.

If this shit really worked I wouldn't have needed a re spray cause the protection on my paint work would have protected it! Lo

We rocked up at the stealership around 6.30 pm last night, with no prior notice, so any 'pretty young things' would have been long gone!

Working at a dealership and detailing quite a few cars myself i can tell you yes, it's a total waste of money. It takes about 4 hours to apply, depending on vehicle size and detailer skill and they charge you out the ass for it. Does absolutely nothing, just makes the whole interior shiny and the outside well gives it a polished look but then again so does a $10 bottle of wax :)

I think I remember someone that works with it saying "put it this way, I can get leftovers for free, and I don't use it on my car"

Load of rubbish, my main concern would be if the product contains any silicone that won't be good for the inside of the outside of the car in the long run.

I agree with the earlier comment of getting a detailer to put a quality sealant over it, otherwise just leave it and wash it regularly with a sponge, that's the best thing to do :p

1) yes it will almost certainly contain silicone

2) please for the love of all things shiny dont use a sponge to clean cars

Wow, for that much you could get a respray and fix the biggest issue with factory paint to begin with...

How do you wash a car then :iough:

microfibre or high quality wool mitt. A sponge absorbs water, but all the tiny particles of dirt stay on the surface. Next thing you know you will have lots and lots of scratches
