Hi all,
New to this forum and very happy I found it.
I have an issue with mt 96 TS SE wagon where it produses a grinding noise when turning.
I'm happy to fix it mysself, I just need some idea as to what it might be. I don't have access to a hoist to look underneath the car, but if I can localise the problem, then I can use jack stands and wheel ramps.

Hey,
Welcome to the nut house.. So tell us more about the noise. Is it when you turn left and right or just one.? You sure its a grind and not a whine.? Power steering pump maybe.? could be low on fluid.
If it is grinding then could be hub bearings. Happened to my old ks xi. Eventually got worse as it made it while going straight as well. Then again, it could be the tyres rubbing on some plastic in the wheel well that may have come lose.

It does on both left and right turns.
Thanks for responding.

It doesn't do it while its running straight. I should do the bearings anyway, just so I know they're done.
Also, I should mention that it has 16" wheels on it. It could be rubbing on something. I'll put it up on stands tomorrow and have a look.

it could be bearings, or the cv shafts i had to do them on my 97 magna a couple years back

Oversize tyres scrubbing the inner fender shroud? Mine do.

I'm thinking that as well.
I wouldn't mind a set of original 15" TS verada alloys.
In the meantime, I'll pull the wheels off and see if there's any signs of rubbing.
Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Plenty of locals around to help you out...
Usually.. Qld can be remote sometimes...

A grinding noise, is it somewhat of a clicking noise? (i.e not a constant noise)
But only when turning.
Sounds exactly like when my CV joints needed replacing in my TS magna

Biggest question is define the noise itself, sounds silly but is it a; cluck cluck cluck cluck noise when turning right or left, a plain unchanging grinding noise, a noise that only occurs when you bop a pothole - kinda like a baddadadada rubber on metal noise?
Tell me that and i'll tell you what it is :P

I now have a project...replace the CV joints and bearings.

None of the above. Just a grinding noise on the turns.
