G'day all, fairly recently purchased a 94 (delivered 95) V6 Executive Wagon, and am looking
at starting to give it a bit more personality.
One of the first things I need are some 6x9s somewhere in the back, but I don't have access
to a service manual. Is there an EASY way of wiring these up, before I start trying to figure out how to pull apart the dash to get to the back of the stereo?
I'm on an extremely tight budget at the moment, so probably just have them strapped to the cargo barrier or something as a temporary measure.

Hey mate.

There is room to install them into the side plactic bits on the boot. If you pull them off you will see the only place which they will fit. once you have done that mark it on the back on the back of the plastic and cut it out with a jigsaw. its not really that hard just a couple of hours.
the wiring is not to hard aswell. just run the wire along the side of the car. i have done this and it can be done so no wire is seen at all.
if you want a pic just let me know and i will get one for ya.

cheers

Never really though of putting them in the side panels (then again, haven't put much thought into where to put them fullstop) - will have a look when I get around to it, am all car'd out for today ; )
Pics would be handy.
Do you actually have to get to the back of the stereo to wire it up, or is there an easier way to tap into the line? I spent a while a few weeks ago trying to figure out how to get into the console to reach the back of the stereo, but decided I was pushing my luck pulling that much stuff apart without a manual.

the factory speakers in a tr/ts SE wagon were mounted in the roof (raised section in cargo area hoodlining), I doubt there would be room for 6x9's here unless u used spacers. The earlier sugestion of putting them in the rear quarter trims is probably the best idea. The centre console is pretty easy to pull apart, remove the console to remove the trim around the stereo, console it is held by 2 screws in rear bucket, 2 screws under ashtray and 2 screws in the rear sides, if yours is an auto then just move the gearstick and console back to get at the stereo trim screws rather than pulling the console apart around the gearstick. hope this is of some help.

To get to your stereo, start from the center consol and work your way back to the stereo. its just a matter of unscrewing a few screws. it will take 5 min max.
do you still have the stock radio or have you put in a new head unit?

It's a 5speed manual.

Stereo is the stock AWA one, radio and tape only, the one in the user manual with only two knobs. Probably upgrade at some stage, but for the moment it's doing the job, as I have a tape output for my mp3 player, so can feed my mp3s through it. Not ideal, but I'm not wanting
to blast the windows out with it, just get some tunes happening in a reasonable manner.

Think I had an old EQ lying around somewhere...

Do the head unit first. It's the weak link.

6X9's do fit into the roof area but sound terrible.

I just swapped these out for some 6.5" Kenwoods that are 40mm thick. (There's 50mm between the insulation in the roof and the stock speaker stands) I have added Sony 4" to the front which I added a crossover capacitor (47uF in my case) to the positive wire to cut out the bass. The fronts where added whilst I had the windscreen out for repairs. It would be a pain but can be done with the windscreen in.

I used about 20M of oxygen free copper cabling to wire up all speakers with this. It wasn't hard and took the best part of an afternoon to do. I highly recommend you do this if you want a nice sounding system. Oh and solder all joints.

The whole lot minus head unit set me back $ 97 and a good part of an arvo.

4" $30
6.5" $45
20M OFC $20 (bought in that length I got a discount) I have some left over as well.
Capacitor $2

Cheap enough ? lol

The sound is staging to the front dash area and there's a nice bassy sound. Obviously no subby or 6X9 but nice and clean.

I have done it in my wagon.
After pulling off the side panels I used a jig saw to cut out an oval hole. I then used a nibbler (air tool) to cut a round magnet hole in the metal. The 6x9's sit on spacers for making everything 50 times easier. Long bolts go though the spacers and though the metal which needed to be drilled. Loctite was used on the nuts aswell. Speaker wire was no hassels as you can run it along the side of the carpet plastic protector thingies.
You can have mine if you want - speakers and precut side panels . My pioneers are distorting and my side panels have had their share of wear and tear and hair and pear and lair and snare and iear. Sorry bout that. Thats budget for ya. Oh yeah and getting to the stereo is such a sinch.
When I installed mine it just adds so much more. Essential if you have a subwoofer as they have a habit of drowning out sounds but yeah so add speakers in the back they make a mecca difference.

My TS 94 wagon V6

yeah it's got alot of straches and dents but it's a good car parents abused it before i got it.

That's where my speakers went 6" sonys only problem is the ABS ECU is somewhere around there just watch you don't unplug the thing. like the idiot professtional install guy did with mine.

A few Qs for someone who knows the wiring of these beasties...

Finally got around to pulling apart the console, have a few queries:

The wiring to/from the stereo itself has
Red, Red&White, Black -> power stuff I'm assuming? Red&White accessory power maybe?

Black&White, Green&White, Red&Green, Blue&Red -> I'm thinking the wire with red are the signal wire, are both of the other two ground, or is Black&White something different?

BUT on the plug that connects to these, there are 4 more wires, which aren't connected -> Red, Grey&Black, Red&White, and Black. Any ideas what these are? Could they be existing wiring for amp power, rear speakers, ...??

Oh, there's also a yellow 20- or 21- wire plug which isn't connected to ANYTHING - any ideas what that's for?

I don't really want to attempt to rewire everything only to find the wiring existed in the first place...

Thanks

stop right there, you've got it all wrong.

12v constant power: Red-Green
12v acc: Blue-Red
Interior lamps (not needed for a new head unit, cover this up!): Green-White

Front left spk (+): Black
Front left spk (-): Black-White
Front right spk (+): Red
Front right spk (-): Red-White

As for the unconnected leads, im not sure yet.

Hmm, OK, kinda makes sense once you know what they are, the bloack of four wire for speakers, then power stuff...
and reg-green to signifiy power-always, red-blue to signify power-sometimes...

Was just going it it with my usual assumption that red means positive, black means negative/earth... obviously I haven't done much with car electronics, I should have realised they usually don't have a seperate wire for earth, just use the case body...

Thanks, and any help on those spare wires and spare plug would be appreciated (seems unusual to have a 20-wire plug just sitting there doing nothing...)

DON"T DO IT!!!!

never put the speakers in the back of a wagon in the side panels facing each other!!, they cancel each other out and sound sh*t!!

if you HAVE to put them there, make the spacer on an angle so the speakers don't actuallt face each other, or put them in the tail gate, yes more wiring and a little bit more trickier, but the souynd quality will be more than woth it!!

also as for the front, i put 1"tweeters in where the 4" standards were in the top of the dash and 6.5" in the doors, sounds awesome!! the staging is brilliant with a sub, crystal clear as well!!
