Can anyone please tell me what size the nut is that holds the steering wheel to the shaft on a third generation.
Thanks in advance.

I think its either 17mm or 19mm. One of the smaller two on a conventional wheel crossbrace.

Heres a write up by Grelise, I have done this a few times without diconnecting the battery, the method was to start the job 20 mins after the car was turned off, it lets the capacitators lose their charge out of the airbag system, and a tip, remember to mark the wheel and shaft with a scribe, and transfer the mark to a new wheel (if you're replacing it). This should prevent any alignment issues..

Thanks all. Airbag is no issue. I used to fit cruise controls for a living and never disconnected the battery to remove an airbag. Now at least i know what size socket i need to take.

I'd be taking a 17mm socket :) Plus an extension bar long enough to clear the wheel.

Use a 4 way wheelbrace, I have found this by far the easiest way in terms of leverage.

It's 17mm, I believe the wheel nuts (as in tyres and wheels) are 19mm.
