Hi,

I have a 2003 TJ Magna series II Limited Edition (Kashmir)

I had a lower door trim fail (attachment points broke) so I bought a new trim, and paint, A Grey Primer PPG color and clear top coats. Paint matched really nice, and all was good for about 2 weeks. and then the paint began to flake off in chips from the flexible rubber bottom edge.

I spoke to a panel shop painter with significant experience who mentioned flex aid as an additive.

I hope someone can offer specific recommendation as to product to use to prevent this happening again. (I have bought another new trim to start again)

what does Mitsubishi recommend?

what is the trade name of flex aid? tried a google search but no joy.

Many thanks,

Darren

If you used normal primer that would be why its flaking, a flexible primer (also called plastic primer or plastic adhesion promoter) is needed when painting plastic parts.

Flex aid is an additive that is mixed in when you mix paint + thinners into a spray gun. Goes into both primer and top coat. Of course, if you are using spray cans, this info is of no use to you unless you can find a paint mixer who can do the mix into a spray can.

When spraying ensuring you a using a specific thinner for the job, for example when front bars are done a different thinner is used in conjunction with the paint to give it the properties that are required.

With that said that will only work assuming the primer is the correct primer, ensure that it is a plastic primer and is being thinned once again with the right thinner and you shouldn't have any issues.

Failing that seek an Automotive Professional that has done it before and they should be able to have a look at what you've got and tell you what else you need.

Thank you for your replies.
The meathod that will be used to apply is a spray gun.
At work we have a spray booth and some very experianced spray painters. However they dont usually do automotive work.

So guidance as to product brand / names is what I'm trying to find correctly.

which is the right primer? where can it be bought? or where is the best place to ask?

Thanks everyone!

I just bought a $5 can of plastic primer from Autobarn last time I painted plastic, worked a treat. Should be plenty for 1 door trim.
