hi guys, just bought a tj vrx on the weekend and drove fine till a couple of days ago i started getting flares in 3rd gear while driving it in triptronic. i booked it into a mechanic and he explained that it is common after the battery is disconected that the computer needs to relearn and should be fine after driving for awhile but i have driven it for a couple of days now and no improvement. the guy i bought it from serviced it reguarly but he did it himself and never had the trans serviced. i guess what im trying to say is ambi going to have to get it relearned by a mechanic every time the battery is disconnected or will it have to be done by a mechanic each time???

The relearn procedure can be done by yourself. I did it myself this week when I disconnected the battery to fit my steering wheel. Do a search (easier to do on google, search 'site:aussiemagna.com transmission relearn'), there are multiple threads about how to do the relearn procedure.
Edit: can admin sticky the transmission relearn thread http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86194&highlight=transmission+relearn+procedure in the third gen section? This question comes up so often, at least twice a week...

ok so i tried the upshift procedure but the car would not upshift into 3rd on its own. i tried doing it manually and slowing down but still no change.bit is booked in for a relearn tomorrow with a mechanic so hopefully he can fix it. it only started doing it after i discconected the battery to put an amp wire on. so hopefully it is just a relearn and not trans problem. it flares in both triptronic and drive

Have you had the trans serviced during your ownership? If not, I'd be getting it done sooner rather than later

ive only had the car for about a week now and when i started getting the flares i contacted him to find out if he ever properly serviced the trans. all he did was change the fluid so i got it booked in today to get day to get a full service
