Gday there
Im new and having some problems with the wife's TF magna, 1997, 3.0 v6 i bought it for her to learn to drive in,
We purchased it in August and was running really well, about 4 weeks ago out driving and heading up quite a large hill here in sydney it started coughing and spluttering like you wouldn't believe,
We got to the top and i pulled over, popped the bonnet, nothing wrong from first looks,
Coughed all the way back home, (got the falcon out).......
Went down the local auto shop to get some idea's, they asked me when was it last serviced, as we had just bought it , i didnt know any history and the last owner said it was due for oil/filter etc.
They said give it a good service ie: oil/fuel/air filters, plugs,,,,,,,,, it's going to be easy fix,
So till now we have done the following:
Oil
Oil filter
Air filter
Plugs, front and back
Injectors cleaned
Fuel filter
New Leads
Dizzy cap and rotor button
Battery was replaced Jan this year,
STILL happening!! by the way no engine light on either, have run it on E10, but have now stopped, using premium
Where to next, Im all yours
Regards

Possibly clean the MAF sensor, the square looking thing right after the air box. Or possibly (don't quote me on this) the oxygen sensor is stuffed, which would incorrectly cause the ECU to tweak with your injection.
Maybe fuel filter? - Nevermind I just re-read the list on your post.
MAF/fuel pump/clean the throttle body, pull the isc off and squirt carby cleaner in where the ISC sits as well. i would clean the throttle body first, could be full of carbon

Thanks for your reply,
If oxy sensor was bad would engine light come on??? coz havent seen it come on yet,
Going to clean the maf /throttle body tommorrow,

Took it back to mechanic this morning and he said they dont like E10 at all, could be dirty fuel, run it on premium for 3-4 days and se how that goes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but runs fine cold!! soon as motor gets to normal temp really turns to crap!

as its temp related might even be the coolant temp sensor. vee

My money would be on MAF sensor. Had several skylines that ran rough as guts when warm and was always AFM (MAF). Maybe Magnas are different IDK
Can u swap MAF's with a NSW member and take it for a run?

E10 is 95 octane and the 3.5L runs just fine on that. The problem is more likely to be a temp sensor, telling the ECU the engine is cold and giving it extra fuel (too rich) or an air leak somewhere between the MAF and combustion chambers (too lean). Rich or lean? Ask your spark plugs!
After looking at one of the spark plugs, I'd check error codes in the ECU.
(PS check the MAF is plugged in.)

Gday
Yeah i thought the E10 thing was crap my falcon runs bloody great on it, although a mate at work says his magna wont run on it at all! figure that out!
The maf is plugged in , when unplugged idles really bad, plug it back in perfect, give it a pump on the throttle and it wizzes up to 3k quick no problems, just a couple of burbles and pops etc etc,
Air leak,,,,,,,,,,wouldnt it run crap from cold, i started it up this morning bout 8am, backed it straight out the drive up the road (cold) no problems at all,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, got about 1-2 kms out and there she started, running like crap! not smooth, popping and jumping on the road
Coolant temp is only about $35 might get that out the way,
QUOTE : I'd check error codes in the ECU.
Does the engine light have to come on for that?? as it doesnt come on at all,
Regards
And thanks everyone for the help so far, this is quite frustrating, but can see a end in sight with some help,

Gday there
Just pulled the MAF and cleaned the throttle body it was grubby!!
The MAF didnt look dirty/broken....... do they just end up crook???? just also took it for couple km's drive, working like a treat till,,,,,,,,, the 2-3 kms then,,,,,,,,,, off she went turned to crap! coughing/spluttering/ playing up,
im putting it into someone this week with a code reader, see if they can diagnose the problem,

Bad oxygen sensor won't throw a CEL :(. If this is the problem, the exhaust might smell of petrol and the tailpipe might be showing a lot of soot.
Quickest way to check whether it is the oxygen sensor without test gear is to get the engine to running temperature, then shut it down, disconnect the sensor (plug on passenger side of console under the carpet), reset the ECU, then restart the engine. If the engine runs better with the sensor disconnected, let it cool down and then remove the sensor and check its physical condition, otherwise plug the sensor back in. A bad sensor will likely be caked with carbon.
NB: if you disconnect the battery to reset the ECU, you will of course need any radio codes. Unplugging all the ECU connectors then replugging them is more awkward, but disturbs less.

Went to mechanic this morning with it,
He put the code reader on and come up with nothing,
He took it for a drive and has changed the coil in the distributor, FIXED!!!!!!
