View Full Version : Stainless Exhaust system for TF sedan
I have a standard exhaust system on my wife's TF sedan and expect it to die some time in the near future. I want a stainless system - QUIET - not loud. Stainless pipes, rear muffler and possible resnonator as well. Who does SS systems for a Magna?
Any reputable Exhaust shop will do a stainless exhaust system. Price will be an issue though so I would drive around and get some quotes.
If you want to source your own parts or buy a cat back system try these guys:

I'm pretty sure that Xforce did have an all stainless cat back system for the 3 Gen FWD magnas at some stage. I couldn't find anything on their website so you would have to contact them.
Personally, I have this fitted to my car:
http://www.amazon.com/Magnaflow-14586-Polished-Stainless-Muffler/dp/B000XQO14W
The good thing about this free-flow muffler is that it is large, pretty much the same size as the full size stock magna mufflers so it isn't that loud and gives a nice sporty wail at WOT.
It is a centre/offset type which suits the magnas (Don't buy a Centre/Centre type). Straight through muffler will give you biggest power gain, so if you had to only one thing to do, then do that!!
To keep the car quiet, go big on the muffler (same size as stock). Smaller mufflers = louder exhaust.
Resonators help reduce/eliminate that raspy sound and help to minimise droning.
Won't be cheap and going stainless, won't give any HP increase over mild steel. Only that it looks prettier and will last the life of the car.
Being a TF it will only have a 2.14" bent piping, so switch to 2.5" mandrel bent system, like the later TJ series magnas, as you'll pick up some power there.
Personally, I would also look at investing in a set of HM Perry headers and Y pipe (these are made from 409 Stainless steel and spray coated).
Lastly, I'm assuming your TF is a 3.5 Ltr.
Thanx for your reply. No - ours is a 3 L manual transmission. All I want is an exhaust system from the cat back which is SS (and hence will last) and is quiet. I have already replaced the rear muffler about 2 years ago and it is starting to growl a bit. Not too loud, but I like it quiet. Unlike nearly everyone else on this site, I want a quiet car - we do lots of long-distance driving, and it is less tiring if it is quiet. As a touring car, there are few vehicles which come close to the ease of driving which you get for the price you pay for a Magna.

How long do you need it to last? lol
There's no over the counter s/steel system for the magna; none that I could find anyway. X-Force may have something but I don't think it would suit your needs anyway. :)
Which parts are you chasing in s/steel? Use a rear muffler from any VRX/ Sports Magna & the centre resonator from any 380 along with mild steel piping from your local exhaust shop. Both the muffler & the resonator are s/steel & will be far quieter than any aftermarket parts. They'll also be cheaper if you buy them 2nd hand. The piping is cheap enough to replace if/ when it's needed.

Thanks for your help. I was not aware that the VRX/Sports magna rear mufflers were stainless. They probably are noisier than the originals, but I will consider them. Nor about the 380 resonator - does that fit the Magna and include the pipework?
I want it to last at least 10 years because at this stage, there is no way I can justify throwing the car away before then. Thusfar, it has been the pipework which has actually failed. The original resonator developed a pinhole at the rear flange, so I assumed it was stuffed and not worth chasing and rewelding. Wrong! When I had the new one in, I cut up the old one to see how bad it was. It was only a pinhole after all. Same with the rear muffler - the pipe had failed so I got a new assembly and the muffler was in very good condition. The replacement muffler is farty after about 3 years and will probably go soon, hence the question re stainless.

As are the TL/W ones as well.
Personally if you are keeping the car a few years go and get a genuine system. Realistically the original system lasted 7 - 10 years in the first place thus why not use that again, chances are in 7 years the car will be long gone anyway
If you dont like growl forget any aftermarket muffler at all, only genuine will stop that. If you are using genuine get the main pipe and muffler from a TL as they are the correct lenght for the TF and have the better bends, no more noise either lol
Thanks Mal. Experience such as yours is invaluable to us novices.
1 Can you still get genuine MM exhaust systems?
2 Are the genuine ones still made to orignal specs or are they done by an aftermarket manufacturer and supplied or stamped by MM?

1. Yes you sure can, they are expensive compared to the aftermarket ones but the quality is so much better
2. Again yes, I had one on my TE Wagon from a TL Wagon, will outlast most of the aftermarket units, they dont have the press bends and are generally zink coated unlile aftermarket ones that are just painted silver.
The mufflers usually have the Mits Diamonds on them, the centre section will be plain with an oval resinator in the middle and sometimes a small hot dog near the back as well
Thanks Mal. Excellent service. When I need a new muffler, you're the man!

The centre resonator or the rear muffler? (Or both?)
