Hi,
I've taken out the factory standard radio that I've had since new. I bought a new Kenwood unit and can't get it to work properly. I get it to work when I connect the ignition and the battery wires all together, but that means the radio is on when I take the keys out. The original radio had two connectors- one with lots of wires and the other a small sized blue wired which I assume is the ground and which I connected the ground for the new radio.

Any ideas?

Don't use that other blue wire!
The old unit grounded from the brackets. You will have to ground to the body your self.

the blue wire on its own plug is the for the power antenna/remote signal for amplifier if i remember correctly, so don't use this as a ground. there is a small screw you can undo for the frame inside the centrepiece. attach a ring/eye terminal and fix that sucker in place right there. it should work a treat. i can post a picture of the wiring setup that i have if you'd like.

I grounded the earth wire of the new radio to a metal bracket in the centre console. The radio still only works if I connect the ignition and battery wires together. The car key buzzer doesn't lock or unlock the car as well .Any ideas?

i would say you haven't quite wired your new H/U properly, or have bumped something. did you remember to reconnect everything before putting the fascia back on?

Thanks. I have connected everything but haven't bolted it in - the radio is sitting loose in the console. Do I need to have the radio bolted in?

shouldn't need to bolt everything in for it to work. just make sure you check your cables in case anything is loose, incorrect or touching something it shouldn't.

Did you disconnect the battery during the instal?
If you didn't it sounds like you might of blown one of the fuses in the yellow holder in the engine bay fuse box.

Thanks for the advice. I found the fuse had blown in the engine compartment. All works now. The computer display now shows the number 5 - must pop up if the battery was disconnected for some time. I'll go and find a post on that now.
Saved me going to an auto-electrician. Thanks again.

5 means sedan, you have to pick if its sedan or station wagon, and if its a 3.0lt or 3.5lt, use the up and down arrows to pick and hold mode to confirm
