. . . . or whatever you want to call it.

It's the 3 button remote for the TJ and TL I'm on about, anyway.

One jumped at me at the wreckers, attached to a key in the driver's door.
Took it home, pulled it apart, resoldered the battery holder onto the circuit board, now alive and working on the TJ.

Motivated me to have a look at the non-working one that originally came with the TJ. The thing was full of liquid (sweat? Bath water? prune juice? whatever . . . ) but two of the three buttons are stuffed and not working.
They are easy to unsolder and replace, but where from?
Anyone found any of these at hobby shops like Dick Smith, etc?
Any other potential source of these micro switches?
Guess I could look for another one at the wreckers I suppose . . .

The rubber buttons? EBay for about $15.

I managed to pull the switches apart, and clean the gunky reside very softly and put it back together.

I didn't de-solder the switches of the base though, just used a very small screw driver to remove the metal top, and then remove the the plastic. After tip the remote upside down and hit/shake the back of it so the tiny metal piece that actually completes the circuit comes out. When cleaning the said metal piece be very careful, it's heaps easy to bend out of shape which means the switch will stay on. Wipe all other bits and re-assemble and hope it works!

In conclusion see if you can get the switches new, if you can't try the above method.

Nope, I'm taking about the surface mounted switches on the circuit board themselves.

These switches have a metal body and the push part of the switch is plastic, I doubt if it will dismantle without being destroyed, but I will try anyway. Breaking something is the best way to find out how it works! lol

EDIT: oh I see! Metal cover unclips, centre pops out. This one is full of goo, needs a soak in water. lol

ANOTHER EDIT: Nope, no good. The centre disc is stuck in firmly, glued in by goop. This remote is a spare, will put it away until I find replacement switches, either new or from another remote. I hate these switches that rely on a domed metal disc to complete a circuit, small ones like this are prone to early failure seeing the sort of environment they live in. Not a good design.

I did a similar fix to my roller door remote...you can source these switches from old VCRs that people trash...they have similar sized push switches...you need to search and be patient to find one the right size...but at least it wont cost anything.

Ordered the ones in the picture, 11 cents each, about 1 mm bigger than the ones in the remote. Probably a worthwhile experiment, but then again it may be a waste of time. Time will tell . . . update when it happens.

Update: Nope, no good. New switches are 1 mm too big and too tall to fit inside the cover.

Still, got a nice gas powered soldering iron with very fine tip out of this exercise, so all good.
I will look next time I'm at the wreckers for any remotes to repair or salvage the switches from.

eBay switches I bought were 1mm too big which made it near impossible to solder onto the circuit board, but the bare board worked fine after a bit of fiddling.

Then I discovered the switches were too tall to fit inside the rubber cover.

Pretty much given up on this, but you could try stripping the remote down to the bare board and washing it with a solvent like methylated spirits to try free up the switches. A jar with a lid, good shake, maybe let it soak overnight? Who knows, might ungunk the switches.

If you really can't live without one, they are about $85 on eBay and I've seen them at locksmith shops too.
Another thing you could try is taking all the switches off, and putting the good switch on the unlock position. Sounds useless, but if you shut your car, hit the unlock button, and walk away, the car will lock itself after 30 seconds. Bit of a cludge, but workable.

Good luck!

I've got micro switches from a VCR, computer mouse and even an old joystick.

the VCR ones look a bit too big and from memory the computer mouse (from a dead MS Explorer) were completely wrong shape. I can't find or remember what the joystick ones looked like - will try and dig them out.

I just had to resolder my battery mount again (4th time maybe) - putting a thicker battery into the thing is probably what breaks it as it requires more force to remove and the weak point gives fast.
I thought it didn't work until I remembered I've had to go through the re-learn procedure each time a battery dies.

Solution: AMC group buy.

(Nah but in all seriousness have you tried maybe asking a place that does the batteries on these? I just went through a similar deal as this thread, my remote works but the buttons are spongey and not clicking. Found one of my dead spares had clicky buttons. Took it in to get battery replaced and the guy seemed pretty cluey, explained basically exactly what this thread said, the buttons build up gunk and need to be replaced or buy a new one. It's possible maybe they might know how to repair or get new switches?)

Try these, but check dimensions:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/50-Pcs-Momentary-Contact-4-Pin-Miniature-Micro-Switch-/390494649309?pt=AU_B_I_Electrical_Test_Equipment&hash=item5aeb4b7bdd

I bought a lot of 50, used it to fix one for my TJ. Of course, every time I drop it I need to resolder the battery holder. lol

Probably easier to take working switches out of some of your remotes and using them to fix others.

You haven't search well enough :P http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/100pcs-4-5-4-5-H3-8-mm-tact-switch-push-button-TS-039-/170796105578?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27c43dbf6a

What you need is a 4.5 x 4.5 x 3.8 mm 'tact' (tactile) push button switch.

I found a set of 100 of them for less than $4 delivered. Still got around 90 of them left. They're a perfect fit for the factory magna remote buttons. They're slightly taller than the standard buttons but have a much nicer tactile feel. Very solid.
The base pins may need to be slightly bent to fit in the circuit board, but other than that they're perfect.

I originally bought it to fix my back-up secondary remote, but ended up making that one my main one because it felt so good to use. Now going to do the same to my previously main remote. Might throw up a video to help.

ignore my post, it's the smaller tact switches that are needed.

MagnaPI the ones you have listed there are 6x6 also they are through hole not surface mount
the ones in the remotes are 5x5mm 1.4mm stalk and 3mm spacing on the pins i can find 5x5 but they have a 3.5 spacing as the pins are on the outer edges
seriously if you have the right ones let me know where to find them

No Myxin, the ebay listing I posted is the exact ones I bought AND fitted to my magna remote. They're 4.5 x 4.5 x 3.8mm. Like I've said, it's the right size. I have a working remote with them fitted as proof! The ones MadMax posted are 6x6mm.

Still got around 90 of those TS-039 4.5x4.5x3.8mm ones here. Send us your address and I'll try and send you out a few when I have some time.
