How accurate are the trip computers in these regarding km's left to a tank?

I know in some cars, the km's to empty cannot be trusted just wondering where does the 380 measure up

Clearly they base fuel consumption on recent history - not sure how far back and if time or KM

So if u have just done a 100 km at a gentle 8L/100K on the freeway and get into heavy stop/start city traffic DTE estimate may well be very optimistic

That said you can also get a feel for the calc reliability by comparing fuel added at the pump to fuel used on the trip computer

Get in the habit of only filling to first cutoff and resetting TC at each fill

DTE is calculated also by fuel remaining in tank, so calibration of sender affects the answer

Capacity is 67L, so if you fill when TC says you have used 55L but pump adds 65 litre you have a big problem with DTE!

Our tc is very accurate although distance to empty does allow a buffer or reserve in the tank so you might only put 62 litres when it says 0km to empty. That is normal

Many times I've had total fuel usage read 68 litres used when I only have a 67 litre tank and fill up and only fit 65 litres in.....

I guess you live/drive close to a lot of servo's :)

When mine reads 0k to empty (ie it's supposedly empty) I usually have between 5L and 10L left in the tank.

I recall seeing/reading somewhere that it's deliberately pessimistic, so a punter can't sue MMAL for running out of juice well before the DTE distance is reached.

Lost my post sorry. Here's the original....

I usually do about 80k's when the distance to empty flashes ----. I think it's more of a safety thing then anything, hence why fuel light comes on at approx 60 litres used.

I am mostly on LPG so mine doesn't get used much, but I seem to recall in my old VRX (petrol) (or maybe another car) that once DTE gets down to less than 50 K it justs flashes or zeroes - supporting your liability comment!

ok thanks looks like these arent too bad

looking to do a long trip soon, and just wanted to know how far too push it between stops. I might run the tank right down and take note of the gauge, then fill to the top and see how many litres were really left in the tank

Don't know if the 380 does the same, but my TL has only blanked out the DTE display twice, once at 50 then at 100. Seems it gets its blanking signal from the first time the low fuel warning light comes on. Possibly.

There obviously is a safety margin fuel wise, but also remember the fuel pump relies on the fuel to keep it cool. Commodores on gas often burn out the fuel pump if the petrol tank is run down to totally empty.

65 liter tank!

Tank capacity is 67 liters....

The computer is VERY conservative. I have never filled above 59L and that was 720km. I would be very confident in the readout as it is pessimistic and in heavy traffic it will go worst case very quickly.

I had the wife driving with it flashing after it had reached below zero last week.

I told her it was fine. After a bit of time you'll see how much fuel goes in when you fill up.

I think I put in 60L last week so around 7 usable left.

I'm a a fatalist I never drop below half full or empty (whichever way you look at it)

ok drove around with the light on until needle was sitting on bottom mark. Then filled and managed to get 58 litres in it.......... which means dead empty gauge still has 9L left in it, good to know !!

Or 9 litres of sludge. Your fuel pump will thank you for that :)

I think the fuel gauge is exactly like my missus. I totally ignore them both and have a good old laugh when they're completely wrong every time.

I would be a bit worried if there were nine litres of sludge in my tank after using 58 litres.

When do you fill up, after every 50kms, to keep the sludge out of your fuel pump?

Our distance to empty reads 0km when 60l is used.
