Just found the car I've been looking for interstate, sadly I just bought my 2003 TL ES Sedan here in SA.

Anyone care to share their 2-cents on buying a car interstate?

Done it many times. Best you can do is an RAA inspection (or whatever it is over there) for about $200. They check engine, body, suspension etc. Gives you a guide thats all.
More than half I've bought the pics looked better than the car by a long way, keep that in mind.
I know a guy who works for Toll and he does dealer rates. Used to be bout $300 from Melbourne - Adel or $500 Syd - Adel both depot to depot. I can probably still get these rates, haven't checked lately but if your in need let me know and I'll hook you up.
Some have said E-go is well priced, not sure about cars.
Ebay is safer than buying out of the paper/auctions as you can get a bit more realistic descriptions (most of the time) and most sellers are a bit protective of their rating, if they have a rating to lose.
Can be done without too much hassle but obviously more risk involved.

More issues with rego. You will need to get it certified in SA.

You could be right there, used to be just an ID check but they may have incorporated a roadworthy into it the last couple years. Doubt they'd go too hard on the kinda car your looking at, seems pretty clean and stock. If ID + roadworthy it may cost $200 for the process at a guess.
tier 2 inspection (ID check) - approx $60 from memory. This is required for obtaining rego in SA provided there isnt anything else wrong with the car. They'll pick on things like tint and loud exhaust even though it's just an Identity Check.
My car landed in melbourne, got complied at a workshop over there and i drove it back to SA. Failed pass identity check first time due to paperwork from DOTARS being incorrect.
Tier 3 is only required to clear defect, change ADR compliance (with relevant engineers cert), or if the inspector is having a bad day when you're getting your tier 2 inspection.

None of this matters until the car goes up for rego. Just drive it till then.

you need a safety to transfer the car to your name

I've sold many cars to interstate people, including my Ralliart two weeks ago, and they have never had any issues. I guess if you ask the right questions, you will get the right answers and be confident. Sellers generally tend to be more honest and open knowing your coming from interstate. I don't sell dodgy cars but i go above and beyond for interstate guys as i know the hassles they have in coming here and then driving home. I always arrange a mechanical inspection and offer to pick them up from the closest airport and send them copies of reciepts before they come.

That's a good way to go about it I think. I for one know that I would absolutely hate to fly interstate and find a car that's not properly described. There is an element out there who think that they can rip off interstate buyers because once you fly out, it would seem such a waste to not drive back in a new car. It puts the pressure on to buy something that you didn't entirely agree to.

Bought this baby off ebay. As a RACV vehicle inspector, It was completely against my better judgement. You see boxes of crap coming through the door everyday. But I bought it and had it shipped down from Sydney on Toll. I'm more than happy. Would I do it again? Probably not. I couldn't be that lucky twice!
