Soooo... I read the Mits manual that said to do gearbox fluid change at 5.5L... drove it, it now doesnt shift into 4th.. then discovered on Castrols website that a dry fluid change is like 8.4L? Is it possible that the low fluid level has toasted 4th gear? This is rather bloody annoying :\

5.5 litres will be in the sump. The rest lives in the torque converter. Lack of fluid will brick a gearbox pretty quickly.

If you only drained and filled is 5.5l, if you drain and remove torque converter is then about 8.5l

drain and fill is pretty much useless

It was a box and converter swap. Think I've killed it Mal? I may cry if its dead...

Best practice is to fill to what you think is right, let it idle and then check, when cold you can still get an idea and get the fluid upto the cold mark, take it for a drive to warm up the box and then check and top up if needed

You may be still ok, just make sure you get the fluid level right

Mm no luck... does the ecu have an ability to limit the shifting or possible failure that is worth trying before we deem it to be cactus?

not a chance, the ECU most of the time will not know if there are auto issues other than solonoids, if no 4th either something is not conencted properly or the trans is no good

Sob... drove a few hundred km on about 6L of fluid before it was discovered to be low :( Might just burn the ****in car to the ground, so over this shit.

So it occured to us that an utter lack of even attempting to shift into 4th surely has to be an electrical issue of some sort, so we pulled apart my old box, located the overdrive solenoid, and will test the good box tomorrow. If this is what the issue is I am going to celebrate like its 1905!

Place your bets people!

Kay good question for you all...

Overdrive solenoid.. has a live voltage for 1st and 2nd gear, none for 3rd, and cant comment on overdrive because it wont engage...

Do the Magna solenoids work so that it activates the solenoid when the gear isnt in use, and turns it off when the gear engages?
