I have noticed that my custom head unit has started to flash its brightness when i indicate (as in its like my headlights are getting turned off - so head unit dims when indicator is on) and my reverse cam also seems to be working intermittently. Any ideas? It's not wired wrong, as this only just started happening.

One of my headlights is out, could this be the problem?

Did fault start when heaelamp blew? If so, replace the blown headlamp and see if it is fixed. If not, bad ground?

I had that problem a few years back, but I didn't have a blown head lamp. The problem rectified itself, I think after the battery went flat, try removing the negative terminal for a few mins. Costs nothing to do and its generally an easy fix if it's computer related.

Also does it dim with the head lights and change while indicating with the lights on?

Sounds like an earth problem. A car that I had years ago had this issue after putting in a new head unit. Wiring a new solid earth to the body, away from other earth points, solved the issue.

Could be an alternator/regulator problem as well. Does the headunit flash with the engine off and hazards flashing? If not, then most likely alternator/regulator issue.

I replaced headlight globe and there was no change. It is only intermittent (but more often than not).

Yes the headunit dims as it is supposed to when i turn the lights on (and it doesn't flash when headliights are on, only when they are off and I indicate).

I'll try the battery unplug suggestion this weekend. I'm not sure about the hazard lights, ill check that too tomorrow. It's just strange that this has only started happening recently, i also wonder if its connected to the reverse cam going fuzzy.

Also, i think the head unit also dims when i brake sometimes too.

My bet is still on faulty alt/reg. Do a search on amc or Google on symptoms of faulty alt/reg.

It seems a voltage drop, so Vlad's suggestion sounds most likely now to me. Id still check the ground wire though as this is a very simple check

OK, so i tested with engine off and the head unit does not flash when engine is off.

I did a search on this forum, and most cases if its alternator related, people say that lights come on and off on their dash (eg srs, traction control etc). This doesnt happen to me. But one thing that was consistant was the blowing of lights (from alternater giving off too much charge?). I have had headlight, parker and fog light all blow in last 3 months. (but could just be coincidence?).

I also couldn't find any other threads with the same problem.

I noticed that the head light also dims when i put the brake on.

As mentioned before, this doesn't always happen, but happens more often than not. Also the black piece of plastic that connects to headlight backing was semi melted...which was a bit odd. I'll try battery suggestion this weekend, if no fix, then ill look at head unit earth...(which would be wierd if it suddenly became worse for no reason?).

Get a multimeter, 4m of wire, hook one end to the battery and then drag it to the cabin and hook up to multimeter. It should read 12 with car off and higher with car running. Mount the meter in the dash and o some driving and take note of reading when you brake and when head unit dims etc and report back.

hey mate

think its a ground problem, as some one mentioned ... try removing the head unit and checking the black wire, and do you need the brightness option ( my head unit has an auto mode sensor)

as a retired auto sparky the 1st thing i would do is check earth lead from battery to body

if thats ok i would just make a new earth wire from body to head unit

its probably a loose screw/bolt

but in saying that if your blowing globes it could be the alternator voltage regulator so make sure you have at least 14.2 at the battery with a multimeter when running

turn on lights and with a few revs you should be at 14.2 , if its higher its the regulator

:yeahthat:

also, if the globe is melting the fitting are you using aftermarket globes? ive read elsewhere on this forum it can be caused by upping the wattage on the globes?
