View Full Version : Slowww coolant loss
Hi all, just had a service done ( oil, filter , trans & coolant change) on the TS 3.0L and told the mech that I was slowly losing coolant about 1cm a week . I topped the res bottle with water as I didn't know the brand or type in it. He refilled with Nulon so at least I can top up with the same but he couldn't find any leak. Nothing in the oil, no bubbles in rad, no steam from exhaust. Puzzled??? Any ideas?

try the heater core in under the dash
how old is the radiator cap

yeah duke check the footwell of the passenger side, under your carpet. Sometimes if its a small enough leak the carpet will soak up the evidence without you noticing until the core just pisses it out! If not, check the hoses under the radiator and make sure it doesn't look too old or when you squeeze it it's all hard and 'crunches'

Get a compression test to test for leaks, but mostly it might be the radiator cap (as suggested by magnabuff)....

Howdy
check for any white powdery deposits around the radiator and all the hoses .. my radiator top plastic tank developed a tiny hairline crack that was oozing coolant ... I replace the cap and hoses every couple of years, as had a few hoses blow in summer.
Thanks all. but rad cap and all hoses are good and there are no problems with heater core but a compression test would help. any sugestion on where I can get it done. Thanks again..

well
if the motor has a lot of kms on it
all guessing
leaking water pump ?
are all the welsh plugs good
put some paper under the car overnight see if it is leaking out
pull the plugs out and use a compession tester
might have a head gasket issue or corrosion

I used to have a really slow leak from the water pump on my 4cyl, was odd, would get a slight dampness around the gasket on the underside of the pump.
What made the leak so tricky was that when the car was hot, the metal would expand and compress the gasket sealed, and when the car was completely cold there wasn't really enough pressure to force the water out, there seemed to be a happy mid point during operation where leaking could occur.

HI Duke, I am going thru the same situation with my TS 3.0L V6. After weeks of checking and researching I have found the cause. It is the engine water pipe that has the o-ring and fits on the back of the water pump. It is not leaking at the front just into the valley at the back of the water pump and down the gearbox. Funny thing is that it only starts to leak when it heats up. I am replacing the pipe and o-ring and hopefully, all will be well. One question that I have is what gaskets will I need for the whole job which includes removing the inlet manifold and valley cover. Good luck with your problem.
Thanks, I'll look in that because I've only got 148000 on the clock so I dont think that the water pump is the problem.

Had plenty fail with less than 100k on the clock. Your doing very well if its still the original.
Best to change them when you replace the cam belt as more than often you don't it will fail before the next belt is due and you have all that work to do again and hefty labour charge if your not doing it yourself.
Look at the welch plugs closely as they can corrode from the inside out and very often at first it is really hard to see as the coolant evaporates easiltywhen the motor is running and sometimes you just see a little bubble of water/coolant sitting on the lip when cold.Had one once that took four years to find as it was not until the gearbox was taken out you could see it.
It may be hard to find until it gets a little worse. Vee
It's now been a few weeks and Hey Presto there it is..A small trickle coming from what appears to be the head gasket just to the front driver side of the valley. I'm going to to try Rislone and see how it go's. I thought $70 bucks for a can of instint fix was a bit steep but if it dosen't work i'm still up for $800+ soooo fingers crossed. Will keep you all posted on how it go's. The car is just too good to sell.. Thanks all.
