The headunit i bought is
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TD696G-7-Dash-Car-Double-2-Din-Digital-Touch-Screen-DVD-Player-GPS-w-Map-/110767981734
It has 3 wires coming from the unit for steering wheel controls. Ground, KEY1 and KEY2. It says it works for "analogue" signals.
Looking at the factory mitsubishi wiring diagram from another thread is it possible to get the steering controls working easily, or am i going to need an adaptor of some sort.

The steering wheel controls in a 380 are resistive and have only 2 wires to interface to the stereo.

yep ground (green/black) and signal (green/orange)
thing is, this stereo has 2 signal wires KEY1 and KEY2, how do i connect these to the signal wire in the factory loom, is it possible to just use one?
Im guessing my best bet is to pull it all out and go by trial and error, but i was hoping someone here might be able to say "yep its easy" or "no dont bother because it wont work"

Found this bit of info from a honda jazz forum, same issue only one signal wire in the car. It looks like just connecting the headunit KEY1 wire to the signal wire from the loom will work. Leaving KEY2 from the headunit disconnected
....but if you only have two wires coming from the car eg one is black and the other green (or any other color) then connect the colored wire from your steering column to the headunit (i connected the color one to Key 1) and then connect the other to a the common ground on the head unit.

Cool, see how you go.
How do you find the head unit, is it good to use, works well?

Success !!!
For future reference, any DVD/GPS Multimedia unit that has a KEY1, KEY2, and Ground wire for steering wheel controls.
1. Connect the KEY1 wire from the headunit to the Green/Orange wire on the small 10pin connector.
2. Then connect the ground wire from the headunit to the Green/Black wire on that same 10pin connector, then run these to a solid ground. I used the mounting brackets as a ground.
Thats it !! Oh then go to the wheel control setup menu in the new headunit, and make sure you HOLD each button on the wheel you want to assign AS YOU press save/complete in the setup menu. Do this for each command or the headunit will see repeat commands ie: volume goes straight to max and stays there.

its ok, the horrible stock speakers dont help things though. The setup is abit awkward, the only shortcuts to choose another source is from the main screen which takes awhile to get there. But for $360 is does a fair bit, looks at home in the dash, overall im happy. Reason for getting the steering wheel controls to work is ive quickly found out large touchscreen headunits reflect like a mirror 50% of the time, making it impossible to see the damn screen!!

I thought the stock speakers were pretty good..
They sound good with the pioneer I just put in any way, might be the unit, if its the internal amps, aftermarket might help. if its the unit itself, nothing will help....

coming from a Fairmont Ghia with premium 11 speaker sound that was ok but not too flash, so i found this factory 6 stacker sounded horrible. Then i fitted this chinese multimedia unit, and it sounds alot better, but still missing alot of clarity....... too muffled
With the 'loud' function turned on, Rock EQ and level 20 volume it gives you a slight kick in the back........... do these cars have a factory sub? Yes i am too lazy to go check right now lol!!

There's no sub. Still on the fence about changing my speakers, mainly cause the fronts aren't plug and play. I was worried the new head unit would not be too good with the stock speakers, but it sounds fine.

Where the hell were you 3 years ago! Good work. I now know what to do when I pull mine out to fit the reverse camera.

ok no sub, i better turn down the bass settings before i pop something lol.
Could you explain the issue with the front speakers, i see there is a connector there, might be easy just to tap into the wires before the plug and run them straight to the new speaker terminals?
I'd say the new headunit may be responsilbe for the poor quality. The USB sometimes takes 20secs to load, and skips the first couple seconds of each song. If it craps itself, i'll for out $500 odd for a mid level touchscreen unit. ......... proabably shouldve done that in the first place

same here! I've been having issues with mine, I will just disconnect one of the cables now and hope for the best. my only issue is that I don't have a steering wheel control assigment function on my unit, so I have a control units in there too. will be interesting to see how it all goes!

I think it's the speaker size. The rears are 6x9 but the fronts are a different size, they seem to need an adapter or something.
I got a decent JVC unit that plays Divx and does Bluetooth for $320 delivered from the US. Doesn't have GPS but my iPhone has that and I got the control cable for it too so it's very sweet. About $400 all up with head unit, iPhone cable and new fascia.

what adaptor are you using?
what issues are they? Let me know if you get it working as i could be ditching this headunit for something else soon, and will have to deal with adaptors

I bought an Axess aswc unit. Set me back 80 and let me use less than direct plug. I took it out and I can now seek forward and volume up/down, which is all I really need anyway. all the wrong buttons, but beggars cant be choosers. I think there is a program mode in my unit, but nobody can tell me For sure if there is or not. Either way, i have the aswc if you want it.
Mitsu Miyagi

yeah you would think theres a program mode, i thought that was the whole point of the adaptor
ClassicWalkie
30-10-2012, 07:27 AM
the adaptor has a program mode, but the Head unit doesn't that i can find. so it doesn't assign the controls properly..

i admit i dont know next to nothing about steering wheel controls & adaptors etc, but i'd bet most brand name headunits dont have an assign function, they are only 'capable' of receiving the signal. I assumed the adaptor single handedly is responsible for assigning buttons to controls somehow
its a shame the brand name headunits dont make something plug 'n play like the chinese ones without the need for adaptors

Looking at purchasing a Dig Options Unit from Australian seller. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DIG-Options-GPS-Mitsubishi-Car-Player-Navigation-Challenger-Triton-DVD-Stereo-/280932068749?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4168db2d8d
Done a lot of research and these units have been achieving generally good reviews for some time. Pradopoint, amorok, vw golf, triton and pajero forums to name a few.
Nothing specifically for the 380 but research suggests that tritons have the same plugs as the 380. Apparently the unit itself is used to set up the steering wheel controls.
Interested if anyone has had experience with these.
Cheers

at first glance looks like the same stuff as what everyone else has been buying, but then again for all we know theres honest companies out there that actually put decent parts inside them to make it a half decent quality unit
i guess thats up to you to take the gamble.

Finally purchased the dig options unit together with a double din fascia.
Fairly straightforward installation with plug and play wiring supplied. Small plug for steering wheel controls didn't match so need to hard wire those further down the track.
Reverse camera was very straight forward installation and is an excellent unit. Comes up as soon as you move into reverse with good picture quality.
Sat nav works well but takes around 30 seconds to boot up from cold which seems fairly typical.
Bluetooth is excellent with good voice quality at both ends of the call.
Two usbs but still fiddling with one to get it to read thumb drive, other works as a music list within the nav unit software.
Micro sd card has all my music on,
iPod adapter works and charges but does not remember which song it was at when switched off and then restarted
Radio on fm is at least as good as the factory reception and sound quality is about the same as factory unit.
Fascia required a lip on the inside trimmed off to go over the unit. Used a hacksaw blade for this as it is in an unseen area.
Overall very satisfied.
Downsides are unit is outside line of sight for driver. Touch buttons are a little small on the screen and reflections effect it in the middle of the day.
Now need to sell my old factory system together with the factory Bluetooth and iPod adapter.
Cheers

Sorted out the steering wheel remote controls today and got the second USB working.
Three hour drive yesterday using sat nav.
More impressed by the day.
Fantastic value for the money.
Matt at dig options has been of great assistance.

an update on my chinese DVD GPS unit.
The GPS doesnt work or load at all. Funny that, i checked that it worked when i bought it and never used it since, now i go to play with it after a few months and its buggered.
The radio reception is good when in suburbia............. but driving out of town the signal is lost very quickly, pretty useless.
The only reason why the system is still in the car is the USB functionality for music, and the reverse camera which is a must in these cars considering how poor the rear visibility is

Interesting. The unit I bought in 2009 is still going strong. Knock on wood. It occasionally, and I blame Microsoft, does not boot up properly. I just have to power it off and then on again. GPS works fine. Bluetooth is fine. Radio has no reception issues. My only complaint is that the volume in CD/DVD/USB mode is lower than that in radio. So when I have the volume up in CD/DVD/USB, the over-speed warning can give people a fright. I am about to add a reversing camera to it and plan to upgrade the maps soon.

Exactly, a workmate bought one in 2008 to replace the Eclipse unit in his Ralliart. He was disappointed with the sound quality. He also found out that his unit is single tasking, in that, he can either listen to music or use GPS, but not both. He also had the lower res unit.

when i first got it, the GPS files on the SD card were corrupted and suprisingly the company gave me a 30min window to download the maps & software from their server and install to the formatted card, then it worked. Tried using the GPS couple days ago and all i get is a "illegal operation could not be performed" even after a reset. I will format the card again and re-install the files to see if i can get it working but in the end its a big heap of junk that i dont recommend to anyone.
i even convinced my dad to buy one for his VW Jetta, and he had the same GPS issues, and same poor radio performance, he ripped it out of the car after only a couple months..

Unit i purchased has a setting to enable music streaming while navigation is working.
As an aside vendor is offering two years free map updates for the unit.

The unit my workmate got was the last of the first generation which is single tasking only with 600ish x 300ish resolution.

well i reinstalled the files and the GPS works again....... wtf why would the files become corrupted when the card is just sitting in the unit never being used?

hmm well that sucks, because i bought a new Sandisk card and put the same files onto it and it didnt work. Xtrons tells me only the card they send out can be used. I dont get it ? When i format their card isnt it dead empty? How would the unit know if their card, or a new sandisk card is used?
i assume there are hidden files somewhere in their SD card that i cant see

What size and spec is the sandisk? Most of these units cannot handle the newer cards like SDXC etc. Also, have you formatted it with the correct file system?

the original one is a no name 1.83gb trans flash card formatted FAT32
i tried a new sandisk 2gb formatted FAT32 and didnt work. The people at Xtrons assured me i would not be able to backup files onto another card, so only their card works on unit
however, my xtrons card works on another persons xtrons unit fine as well.

What type of sandisk? SDSC/SDHC/SDXC etc. I still have an old 4GB Transcend 150x SD spare for my unit in case I need to update the GPS maps.

I am doing the exact same thing just waiting for it to come in
I pulled out the old 6 stacker today just to check if I would get a communication error
As i expected it came up communication error on the LCD screen because of the canbus wires going to the unit
does anyone know how to get past this, I know it is nothing major but my mild ocd will eventually get the better of me seeing the com error there whenever I am driving :(
Mitsu Miyagi

change the display to the one where its barely noticable
380Luke
09-04-2013, 05:30 PM
I know you can do that but there has to be a way around that?
I was wondering if I paralleled up the canbus data lines with the data lines to the a/c system below if that would fix the fault
or putting a 120 ohm resistor across the 2 if that would work.
also does anyone have a diagram of the pin outs from the stock plugs from the back of the 6 stacker
I have not had much luck in finding any anywhere!
I have metered out the main plug and know
The 8 speaker wires
The Ignition
The Battery +
But am unsure about pins 3,4,9 and 12
Also in the smaller plug the black and orange and black and green are for the steering wheel buttons but I am unsure what the other 3 are for
If anyone can shed some light that would be great : )
Mitsu Miyagi

diagram is in the first post?
also, someone here has relocated the original stereo all the way to the boot out of sight to remove the error from the display. Unless you do that you will have to live with it, honestly ive forgot its even there.

Originally purchased the black fascia off ebay to complete my install.
Never fitted nicely around the unit so bit the bullet and purchased the double din standard fascia from Mitsubishi. $72 and fits the dig options unit perfectly.
Now to sell my stacker Bluetooth unit and iPod adapter....

these "all in one" chinese units are absolute garbage
i pulled mine out, and fitted a basic Sony touchscreen unit, and the sound quality is 10x better, layout is much nicer & has so much more options. Dunno how i put up with that crap for so long.........
