View Full Version : Help please : engine chokes during acceleration when engine warmed up
Hi
My magna advance 1998 V6 has this problem recently, when the car stops and start, the engine chokes for about 2 seconds then jump when I accelerate. The engine sounds like pinging for 2 or 3 seconds. It happens only when the car stops then move. When engine is cold it runs ok. for about 5 minutes.
The mechanic changed the whole set of spark plugs and new leads but it helped for about a month then happens again.
I read some posts with similar problem and it was pointed out as this may cause by oxygen sensor.
I am not good in mechanical stuff so please give me your advise.
Thanks.
Tony
If the engine "chokes" under full or heavy throttle opening, it could be a blocked fuel filter - the engine would be starving of fuel. Could be a blocked filter or even worse, a blocked pre-filter in the fuel pump (inside the tank).
I've had a similar issue with mine over the past couple of days. It's only happend twice. Prior to it starting, I was fiddling with the pump in the tank, so might retry that.
However, I've also just done my O2 sensor.

Hi Erad
When I first start the engine is ok. It happens only after the engine warms up for about 5 minutes so a blocked fuel filter would cause the problem immediately when the engine starts ?
Very much appreciated for your suggestion.

Hi Rush
I will have a look at the pump in the tank. I have the feeling the pump does not work well.
Thanks for your suggestion.
Tony
Well mine didn't do it today. Car is on gas and runs fine on gas. Will pull the pump out tomorrow and reinstall

Probably unrelated and I'm in no way qualified, but I had a similar issue with my 4cyl magna which turned out to be a faulty temperature sensor. The engine constantly thought it was cold so it would run its fuel ratio accordingly, this was fine when the engine was cold, but as it warmed up the computer didnt adjust itself accordingly.
When you say it happens when it when the engine is cold (as much as its not good practice) does it run fine with a cold engine under heavy acceleration?
If so, I wouldn't think it would be the fuel filter.

When engine is cold (first start), it accelerates and response as usual. After about 5 minutes, every time I accelerate it chokes, engine sounds like pinging for about 2-3 seconds, the car moves slowly then jump. I think if the fuel filter is blocked then it would happen every time regardless engine cold or hot. It may relate to electronic control device which I don't really know.
If it is a blocked fuel filter, it will occur pretty well anytine under heavy throttle opening.
Our Magna is on gas & petrol, but me being such a tight arse, I rarely ran petrol. When it went silly on petrol, I had the injectors cleaned - BIG difference, but it still "choked" under full throttle, so I pulled the pump and found the pre=filter sock absolutely full of mud. Cleaned it out and so far it is fine. I will use up the current tank of petrol and pull the pump again and see how much more the pre-filter sock has filled up. It was solid with mud. I'll also replace the fuel filter again at the same time.

Where is the fuel pump in the tank ? Is it easy to remove ?
thanks
There is an excellent reference in the section "Third Gen Common Faults" page 1 - - "3rd gen fuel sender unit replacement By millert85 21 September 2007". This is not far from the top of the page in this - the 3rd gen section. This sticky is to replace the fuel gauge sender unit, but you have to ge tteh fuel pump out to do it. Also, when you remove the hatch cover under the rear seat cushion, it will be dusty as hell. Vacuum this up so as not to get the crap into your tank. The sock is on the foot of the fuel pump. Getting the fuel discharge line off from the assembly before removing it was a real bitch. I finished up going to Repco and buying a fuel line removing tool. Simple as, but damned effective.l
The TS 3.0L is really responsive when cold but as soon as is get to op temp it starts to miss at the lights and as soon as you select N while you wait it runs smooth . But once under way it misses under load. It seems like it is starved of fuel but when cold it is great. Puzzeled? Has this happened to anyone else?
