So i've got it down to one thing ... starter motor, and the solenoid not engaging

correct me if i'm wrong, but that humm sounds like it ...

now will this work in may car ?
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300777769085#ht_3391wt_1252
^^ if i get my own its only $190 including fitting

take note that it is a manual

So what the exact part number i need any ideas ?

if they get it
Qouted $300 - $350 for a new, round $250 for a recon or rebuild ... does that sound right ?

Have you tried hitting it with a hammer ? mine was not engaging and had to be hit to engage, did that for a week or so before i got it fixed
may be worth a shot

it sounds like the solenoid isnt throwing out the bendix because it seems the starter motor is running. the solenoid has to be working because its powering the motor so maybe you have busted the fork that throws the gear into the flywheel....
try the hammer trick, works sometimes but i dont think thats your issue. you also might have stripped the ring gear but thats doubtfull. try rolling the engine over a little by hand, or stick it in gear and push it then try the starter. if it grabs then its the ring gear stripped, but if it hasnt made crunching noises its unlikely.

yea mechanics are charging me the same i think, i'll let you know they said the estimate without inspection max $350 so heres hoping for much less :)

how much is it to just fix the bindex ?

and how much should a recon or new fitted cost ?

ps: thanks mal, your expertise is highly regarded

I'm in the process of rebuilding my TF starter. The motor has a plastic reduction gear in the centre. This gear also takes all the impact from the solenoid moving the bendix gear. Being built from plastic, the solenoid eventually pulled the centre out of the reduction gear - but the motor will still turn but not engage the flywheel. From an auto elec who advertises on ebay, for $28 plus postage I purchased a kit with new brushes, reduction gear, seals and all bronze bushes.

Also, compared to other brands of cars, the TF starter brushes are only about half as long and this could explain why they fail so early, even though a set of brushes ($8, as I recall) does fix the problem.

I have just been quoted $580 to replace the starter motor in my 1999 Kh Verada. Judging by what I've read here, this seems steep. I'm guessing it's a genuine one (forgot to ask) but I'm tempted to tow my car to another repairer for cheaper. If it's to save 300 bucks I'm definitely keen!

If it's a manual gearbox you can clutch start the car & drive it For that amount of money I would put one side up on a gutter and do it in the street. You have to pull off the plastic guards underneath but it is straighforward from there. One of the mounting bolts is accessed from the opposite side and the other from the motor side. Disconnect the main cable at the battery first. The small solenoid wire spade connector from the starter switch has a plastic locking lug that has to be squeezed with your fingers before pulling it off. You will need a 100mm or 150mm socket extension to reach the mounting bolts. You also need an 8mm spanner to undo the metal splash shield around the starter motor. If you leave the battery cable off for too long the computer will have to relearn and I think it takes about 15 minutes of idling the engine.

6264Matt, I paid $350.00 to get mine supplied and installed into my 99 Verada. Fitting was also free through NRMA as it was a callout. I supose with adding labor, your not too far off the money i paid.
