Hi I am having a huge problem removing the tie rod end. I can't shift the lock nut or the tie rod itself. Yes I have used wd40 and whacked it a few times but no go so does anyone have any suggestions please

the tie rod itself has a flat you use a shifter or
the right size spanner to hold that
and another spanner on the locking nut of the tie rod

you use force against it self and the nut should loosen
if you still cant get it undone find a piece of pipe or something for extra leverage

release the tie rodby undoing the hex nut and split pin
then you can use a hammer or if you have a taper release tool
to release the tie rod from the hub

Tie rod castelled nut has a split pin that needs removing first, then use a spanner (14 mm?) to undo it partly.

If you are replacing the tie rod end, you need to undo the bigger nut on the tie rod end. This needs a big spanner or pipe wrench, but first look at the thread to see which way it needs to go to loosen it, undo this one by half a turn.
Tie rod end sits in a taper, you need either a puller/splitter to get it out. You can use a hammer, hitting on one side while you hold another hammer on the other side, to pop it out.

(Drat, Magna buff beat me to it! lol)

Hi Guys,
thanks for the replies. I have the end out of the socket but I need to remove it from the actual tie rod so I can replace it.
Yep I know about the lock nut, that should undo clockwise, the actual tie rod should undo anti clockwise. I have tried two wrenches pushing against each other in both directions but I can't break them open.
Seems such an easy thing when reading the manual. Unscrew and replace, yeah simple.

Put the end back into the socket. I use a monkey wrench on that big nut after double checking which direction to turn it in, then with a length of tubing over the end of the wrench I lean on it. Never fails.

Hi MadMax yep I am just doing the finishing touches from 2 years ago so I beat your three months at fixing the clutch lol. I have tried putting it back in the socket but there isn't much room to get anything over the wrench for that extra oomph plus I don't have a suitable pipe cause a wrench is much thicker than a socket wrench handle.
Well time to go hunting for a suitable pipe.

try turning the steering to full lock to push the steering arm out a bit further from under the car and you might have a touch more room to get onto it. Vee

well I can't get the F@#%ing thing off. The lock nut should turn clockwise to push it further up the thread surely? I have tried both ways but it just won't shift. Can't get a suitable pipe though.

Can you remember which direction you lean on it?

have you tried hitting the spanner with an hammer . it may help to crack the seal .
you could post in the nsw thread and ask if a friendly local can come and help you get it off
all ask a local work shop to crack it for you.
hope this helps and you get it off

I did mine not long ago to replace a rubber gaiter? Had to raise the car and lay on the floor to brace myself, hard to do it with a bent back, I think the nut was a conventional thread ... the taper, now I had some probs with that .. good luck

well I took the dog for a walk at 4:30 and when I got back went and got my mate so he could hold the spanner onto the nut. I laid down on the floor and put my foot against the spanner and pressed hard. The spanner slipped off the nut so I told my mate to put it back but he said the nut was loose and he was undoing it with his fingers.
I had to do that with another nut or a bolt when I was taking the car apart but I don't like doing it because having replacement hips I nearly dislocated it.

Anyway thanks for all the tips the new one is on and I take it for rego on Thursday. It won't pass but I will find out how much work there is to do.
And for the record you turn the locknut clockwise to undo it.
