View Full Version : Big fella in TL seat . . . .

Yes, well, I'm assuming the previous owner of this "new" 8 year old car I'm driving, was a big fellow, as the steering wheel has wear marks on the BOTTOM (fat gut?) and the seat lower foam has collapsed on the right hand side, and the fabric shows wear consistent with a big bum sliding in and out . . . .
Also the door fabric shows some wear above the arm rest (fat arms too?), so I'm guessing the previous owner was HUGE!! (Apologies if this car was previously owned by you or a humungous relative. lol)
Anyhow . . . . is the seat base foam available new from Mitsu? If so, how many Pesos/Scheckels/Dinari!?
Seeing it's a base SE, I could go looking at the wreckers for a car that matches the fabric interior and was owned by a SKINNY driver, I guess, but driver's seats seem to disappear quick at my local U-pull-it-out-yourself. Seeing it is an electric seat, they will probably want lots for one if they have any. Might be cheaper to just get the foam and some groovy seat covers. lol

Have you looked into getting it retrimmed and fixed up? Call around and don't be afraid to offer up some cash to see how cheap you can get it done. You can't just put any old seat covers on the TL seats as they had side-airbags. This is illegal to do and you are reducing your car's safety. You might be able to get foam cut for cheap from a local factory and then have a professional fit it. I know its possible to also remove the seat trim material, albeit quite difficult.
I'm very sure that getting it re-trimmed would be far cheaper, than what it would cost to buy a new one from mitsubishi, provided that you can actually buy them. I'm not sure if the side-airbag can be purchased separately or not, but if it cannot be purchased separately and the seat comes with it standard then expect the driver seat to be very expensive.
The base of the set is glued to the frame - I tried pulling it apart. You would be better off going to a wreckers with a TL, pulling the set out and apart and getting that (maybe the whole seat) - Mitsubishi don't sell any seats/foam from the magna's anymore - I called them about this a month ago.

I have absolutely no problems with dismantling the seat and replacing the foam on the base, and doing some sewing to rebuild the base's cover.
I can build up the seat base with high density foam cut to shape, but would prefer to just replace the whole base with a fresh one if they are available as it ends up looking neater. I have a supplier of car fabrics in mind and may be able to source matching material.
Forgot about the side airbag, and you are right, it would make a second hand seat from a wreckers more expensive. Might see if any are available, and see the price, but t sounds like a rebuild (rather than a replacement) would be cheaper.

Oh, bother! (I won't use words that may frighten the swear filter lol)
Looks like some building up with sheets of high density foam is in order . . . . . will put that on my to do list, will need foam, glue, matching fabric, camera . . . .
