you'd be looking atleast double that ammount and some to convert to manual properly from quotes that I've recieved.

Not sure how much the tiptronic conversion would be, a different ecu might be required perhaps?

If you do some Research, find out from some wreckers if they have any manual boxes, and if you can get a mechanic/some1 who knows what they are doing to install it,get a manual conversion!
Otherwise, you'd prolly jus have to fork out the money on another Auto,But if you spend the time to research on a manual conversion and you can do it,it'd be the way to go
If i can find a manual Box next year,Mines most defenitely getting done

A "tiptronic" box as far as I know, is the same as a standard 4sp Auto box but with different electronic controls.

Driver or TH smoker would be able to shed some light on this per their thread on the very same subject:

http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6362&highlight=tiptronic

Sarah, If you were considering this option, I would consult either of these two guys as they seem to know whats going on in regards to this as they have done the research and know what is required in order to make it work.

What did you think the TH sports had.Not the 5 speed auto. Was it the series 2 TJ that had them???

so the series II tj's had the 5 speed and before that they used the 4 spd tiptronics? is the 5 spd called the invecs or are all tiptronics invecs?

for the TJs IIs they started fitting tip boxes across the range:

- sports, vrx's and ralliarts came with 5 sp

- everything else came with a 4 sp

a manual conversion would cost alot to be done by a mechanic. swapping and auto box would be a 300 buck plus parts job i imagine.

i'm converting mine to manual, it's gonna cost about $4000-$5000

magna boxes are NOT cheap.... and u have to replace the computers/BEM/Immobiliser/keys aswell

BEM??? I never knew you had to replace the immobiliser aswell, but I spose this is due to the ECU being replaced, same go with the key. I always knew it was a big job, didn't think about those few extra things.

2500 for another auto box is a bit high.

You can get a second hand auto for 999 here in WA and a reco box for about 1600. Then there's labour which would be around 400.

Just make sure when getting a reco you find out exactly what is replaced.

Booya is selling a triptonic gearbox from a 2003 KJ Verada. I don't think its worth doing a swap to a tippy though, just not worth the money involved.

Tiptronic is ECU controlled.

There is 4sp tiptronic too. eg: verada, tj2 exec, TL exec.

my car has 164,000 on the clock, and apparently , so the mechanic says it all burnt out(torque converter, pump and transmission) due to "drag racing" or "rolling back and giving it to it"... ??? cant say ive done either (thinks) so im stumped at how it happened.. all i was doin was driving along th highway about 100kmph overtook a truck 110kmph and it jumped bak a gear as i gave her a lil more juice ,n all of a sudden no power just rev's :doubt: dint help i was overtaking a truck and coulda had a bad accident aswell lol

costing me just over $2000 for a rebuild (being tassie its heaps more $$) .. hard to find 2nd hands at wreckers down here, and they cost about $1600 anyways and ya dunno what condition they are in.. rang around vic wreckers they had afew but with high kms on it, and im not too keen on getting one like that, and plus i need my car asap as i live out bush! lol so i have decided for the rebuild as a better option ..has a better warranty etc too

In this months SA Motor magazine (RAA), they had a review of the 1998-2000 Verada and in it
they mentioned they found a problem when the automatic transmission selected "limp home"
mode, a setting which de-powers the engine. They stata that this fault has been traced back
to moisture in the vehicle wiring multiplug, on top of the transmission, possibly as a result of
cleaning the engine. Cleaning and drying this joint will often rectify this problem.

My TJ 5 sp Auto did excactly the same thing. Except Im on my 3rd box at 56000km. They keep just putting in "reconditioned boxes" under warranty. I dont flog my car either. Im taking Mitsu to the Office of Fair Trading.
