3L = 187 teeth
3.5 = 195 teeth

Really, so the longer bore thus higher deck height may have nothing to do with it

Yep. Keeping it simple, cams are further from the crank in the 3.5L, hence the belt has to be longer. By 8 teeth, apparently. I think the 3.5L belt is a quarter of an inch wider too.

It seems like a lot of trouble when other manufacturers change the crank stroke but reduce the height of the piston crown to the gudgeon pin (that is, use a different piston) without changing any of the external dimensions.
